Hi Everyone!

I have a very strange problem with my computer. Whenever I play a game (FEAR, Condemned, Half life 2, COD2 etc) It completley locks up. I mean the sreen goes weird for 1 second and then my monitor losts the signal, even the sound repeats itself, and the only thing I can do is to completly turn off the comp. Reset does nothing. The strangest thing is that this happens even when I pause the game.
I have a P42.4Ghz, Abit IS7 Mobo, 1GB DDR Ram (400mhz), GeForce6800GT (256MB), 400W PSU.Tried reinstalling windows (WinXP SP2), tried different drivers. My vid card is not overclocked. Any help on this one? Thank you for reading, and thanks for any answer.

GFX card is overheating I would guess, seen as the problem has lasted throughout reinstalls and driver updates. I would suggest you first check the heat of the GPU, you can do this in the advanced graphics settings(right click on the desktop and goto properties, then move to the settings tab and click on the Advanced button. Move to the "geForce 6800" tab and click on the "Temperature Settings" section to see your temps), by using a program named "SPEEDFAN" or by using a program named "Riva Tuner".. Your GFX card should be about 50-60 idle and no more than 90-110 when under load, it will lock up usually at the 130+ mark but I have seen my own hit 180-300 when I didn't install a fan properly haha..

Should this be the issue, which is most probably is, you can solve it by buying a third party fan, I love my NV Silencer (http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=40).. its very cheap and easy to install.. my current idle temp is at 47 in a hot room, it only hits around 55 under load.

Let us know the results of the heat tests..

if it only happens in games, then it's almost certainly a videocard problem
but could also be any other component heavily exploited by games
like the soundcard
try different soundcard drivers or to disable it from device manager or just lower acceleration from dxdiag

Mm.. if it isnt heat, I would say s_hole is on the right track, it could easily be a IRQ error.. try swaping the PCI components around or as suggested above try disabling certain devices such as the sound card. I would also suggest downloading MEMTEST86 and running it to see how the memory is doing, as it could be a memory issue and it is worthwhile ruling this out.

Could be that your PSU isnt giving out enough power, it should be at least a 500w if your using a 6800GT!

I have 2 DVD burner, 2 hard disks (1 SATA + 1 PATA), a TVtuner card, 1 ethernet card. I even tried disconnecting one of the hard disks and the 2 dvd burner, no luck.

tried warming up the card with a hairdryer. Nothing happened. No lockup. It's not overheating.
