Chromehounds
Quote: |
Chromehounds brings intense multiplayer HOUND combat to the Xbox 360 for the first time ever. In this massive global conflict, three nations with opposing political views have erupted in an all-out war. From the cockpit of a giant metal "HOUND", you must power your tower of heavy artillery through giant war zones while backing five others on your squad and dodging the firepower of six other live players via Xbox Live. One team member will be elected Tactics Commander and lead the team through the fray via voice commands. You are responsible for arming and customizing your massive mechanized weapon, but overload it and you won't get very far. Your teams' successful completion of missions will open up valuable new items that will bring you all that much closer to victory. Chromehounds also offers numerous single-player missions, plus training modes for team combat and HOUND control familiarization.

Havent played the demo, but its labeled as "Action Simulation" and thats a fine line to walk. Most gamers prefer either crazy action or real simulation. This could be a jack of all trades, master of none scenario. I hope it pulls it off though.. I've always had a soft spot for giant asskicking robots.
Glad to finally be able to post. Been reading the forums for what seems like ages now. Cheers!

I guess it'll have some singleplayer missions, but the bread and butter is probably multiplayer.

I was thinking after Nailbiters comments about alot of people being unimpressed with the game that even if this title doesn't turn out to be all that great you'd have to bet on Microsoft bringing out their own Mech game as a follow up to the Xbox titles. Mechassault 1 + 2 were both huge games, exlusive titles as well, if my memory serves me correctly they were also in the top 5 most played Live titles perhaps even top 3 plus the games had alot of Xbox Live premium content (new game modes, maps etc) released which is obviously a big money spinner for MS.
Have to say the customization screens for Chromehounds do look great, vast amounts of depth to what you can actually build compared to any previous games within the genre. That aspect really does look impressive and again it'll be where the Live experience comes into its own. I imagine they will slowly trickle new components, mechs, skins, weapons, gamemodes and the like onto Marketplace.

I am curious if the game is any good, I saw some HD gameplay footage and I have to say that it looks very pretty. But the fact that the game is in stores already and no-one has reviewed it yet concerns me...

It's not in stores.

So far, Im diggin it. There are several "sets" of story missions, with each one pertaining to a particular class of mech. Theres soldiers, snipers, heavy weapons etc etc. Each mission earns you parts used in the garage to make a custom mech. Im assuming this all plays into the LIVE component, which I havent played yet.
Graphically, the game is servicealbe. It has some "oh shit" moments, but overall the scenery on some of the levels is kind of sparse. The Mechs themselves look great, with most vehicles getting similarly badassed treatments, but the terrain is missing something. The dynamic lighting looks amazing as well. The controls take some getting used to, and so does the HUD. Instead of getting a crosshair in the 3rd person view, you get a picture in picture screen in the upper right corner... showing a zoomed view with a crosshair. Its wierd at first, but you get used to it. You can also switch to the 1st person "aiming" view at any time.
All in all, Im having fun with it. Though I havent really played it extensively enough to make a final call, but thus far.. thumbs up.
P.S. If youre in a mission and you want to back out to the menu, you have to hold the "back" button down. Hold it down long enough and a timer will pop on-screen and countdown till it reaches 0.00 and your mech is abandoned.

You can.. but I havent yet. I was thinking about it though.. and since there was a shortage of 360s at launch.. its not entirely out of the question that people in the US play on PAL boxes. So I dont know that any "red flags" would fly if say someone from the US decided to play the PAL copy of Chromehounds on LIVE (in the US). You know what I mean?
Im not ballsy enough to try it though. Yet.
*EDIT* On second thought... probably be best to wait until its actually released in Europe... heh.. I thought it had been already. Thanks for the heads up AnimalMother.
P.S. Full Metal Jacket = Masterpiece

yup and nice to see that it is for free.
way too little free stuff on the marketplace. especially when it comes to downloadable content for games. things that are free for pc should be free for x0 as well. oblivion comes to mind.

Yeah they charge PC users as well for the Official Mods http://obliviondownloads.com/StoreCatalog_ProductList.aspx?SubCategoryId=1 , Codemasters I believe did the same thing with their Micro Machines game for unlockable vehicles.
Can't really complain $1.89 converted to UK pounds is around £1 (nothing really) which if targeted at kids makes alot of sense. Imagine Little Johnny on Xbox live spending his pocket money on some new armour for his horse or to open up a new dungeon for what amounts to chump change - not really my style of RPG though, despite the great visuals lacks soul/character especially amongst the NPCs and the levelling up system really wasn't for me.
I dont have Live at the moment so can't comment on the prices, paying for stuff like demos and promotional products for games i.e themes and the like is stupid though. I've lost track of the amount of PC games that I've bought off the strength of a good demo and some stuff like wallpapers/skins/themes are good advertising so they should be given away.

Yeah, it's so easy to download content through live, always maxes out my line too.
I've got a load of demos on my 360's hard drive, and still play The Outfit demo online. Also the Saints Row demo comes out in a couple of weeks so it'll be nice to try that before I consider getting it.

Game is shit IMO. Audio is crap, graphics really aren't that great, and the gameplay just seems stale. Online is probably good though, but I don't know.
