You only need codecs if your encoding to dvd for example.
Less is better but I suggest you install XviD-1.1.0-30122005.exe (628kb) while installing it asks if you want the xvid codec to play divx tick yes.
I recommend this because vlc does have a problem playing back the occasional divx/xvid this way you can use wmp or wmp classic to play back these
If you install XviD you dont need divx! which compared to xvid is bloaty crap 14.2mb !!

Good call Basil, I agree you only need codecs if your going to actual encode something, but even in that case you should *never* install codec packs as they're horribly bloated and generally filled with all kinds of nastys you dont want on your system.. As for VLC, Xvid can at times be a little jumpy, generally its dependant on your CPU power.
I'll go with Syn on the VLC. It's a great program although it needs a little polishing around the edges. It plays anything right from the source be it rar'ed dvd's or image files. No need to mount them either.
