Its gonna fuckin own
I just reinstalled good old Sacred + Underworld, damn its good, damn ive missed it.
Titan Quest was fun for a while, but its amazing how much gore adds to the gameplay. Not to mention the incredibly deep character building in Sacred.
I think the single thing that made Sacred so good, and one of the VERY few games who truly are never-ending, is that everything is random and leveled.
The enemies level with you, within limits! Once you have killed all the goblins in the n00b region, and you are level 20, they all die from 1 hit, as should be.
The equipment is completely off the scale insanely random, and no matter if you are level 218, there still is something awesome new to find.
Thats the thing that turned Oblivion from a potential never-ending game, to a boring game with a way too early end.
Once you got daedric armor, thats it, the stats are etched in rock, or should is say daedric rock? There was nothing better to get, no matter what you did.
Same with weapons, an elven longsword was always just an elven longsword with exactly the same stats every time, and never ever to be used more than a few levels.
Why the team chose to let the enemies level, but not the weapons, is completely beyond me. I like that enemies level, if we had a reason to hunt and kill them, i.e. random new loot.

And then there is the space sim, X3 meets Freelancer, Darkstar One. English demo out now, friggen supernice game.
Ascaron is my fav developer, without a doubt. And their design team, man, beats the blizzard design team anyday.
The alien ships and stations in Darkstar One, way better than in both Freelancer and X3, just amazing..
And the weapon and armor designs in Sacred.... Amazing. The only other game ive ever seen with designs rivaling those of Ascaron's team is Lineage 2, might be a boring game, but the armor and weapons look absolutely amazing.

Fully agree with u on 2 points :
- Oblivion bores me after i finished the main quest (although i'm a fan of the elder scrolls serie)
- Darkstar One seems much better than Freelancer or X3 (just tried the demo and like it very
much)
... but i haven't found Sacred very good (too much repetitive gameplay for me ). I know that this
is the weak point of all Hack&Slash games but i felt it more with this one (and Sacred was very buggy)

I have Darkstar One in german. It totally rocks! I'm at about 35% of the main quest and it's still fun! I loved Freelancer too.
I can really recommend it to you. Wait until RELOADED got it in their hands... ^^ I think it has Securom or some other easy copy protection.
I didn't like Sacred very much... So I guess Sacred won't be different.

Downloading the demo for DSO now, thanks for bringing it to my attention Baleur, didn't even know this game existed!
Two things kinda bug me however:
1. There has been ZERO promotion of this title in North America. Gamestop.com isn't carrying it, Gogamer.com doesn't have it listed either. Its been a long time since I haven't been able to preorder any decent title. What's up with this? Seems extremely amaturish on the part of the developers to not have this sorted.
2. Released in german first - now being localized to English. This is a huge downfall primarily because it guarentees it will be full of typos - gramatical errors - horrendously mistranslated dialogue. This kinda kills the immersion. And yes, I know the above paragraph is most likely full of typos and misspellings as well, I'm a hypocritical bastard
Don't get me wrong, the graphics seem top notch (edit: hell, they're horrible!), but the developers come off as kind of substandard and amaturish. Demo's 45% done, looking forward to see what they've got here.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

I don't understand how anyone liked Sacred. The game was so devoid of anything close to game balance that it wasn't even fun at all. Constantly respawning mobs got old really quick too.
Darkstar One seems fun so far. I could never get into Freelancer at all, not sure if it was the controls, the story, lack of interesting things to do out side of the main mission or what, but I didn't like the game. I'm a huge Freespace and Independence War series fan, and Freelancer just seemed like a dumbed-down version of those games. DS1 seems that way too kind of, but it has a number of other features lifted from Diablo-style games that make it more interesting. Only thing I really didn't like about the demo was that, like Freelancer, you're pretty much stuck using their mouse control system. I tried it with a stick and a gamepad, and the controls are just awful.
As for the translation, the demo has pretty good English, but the most of the voices are really irritating. The main character in particular sounds like some whiny emo asshat. Still looking forward to the full release though.

I can't stand it when the main character has a terrible voice actor. Especially in games where they have a few taglines they say every three seconds.
I've never been able to get into the hack and slash genre and the last space sim I played was Xwing Vs Tiefighter demo a lotta years ago. If the reviews are good for either of them I'll try them out.

Darkstar One seems pretty good but I just get the feeling it could get boring quickly and from the demo it seems quite repetitive. Its something i'll definitely play through but after finishing the demo it just made me want to play X3 again.

Darkstar gets fast boring. Just flying, almost every mission is similar and trade is about nothing. Just a hit and run game.

Darkstar One Demo Review -
Graphics - Bland and dull. Freelancer (released in 2003 mind you) has far better graphics than this. Everything just seems very drab and generic, from the flames, to the weapons fire, to the space enviornments.
Controls - A bit more sluggish and sim-like when compared to Freelancer. Not necessarily bad, it comes down to a matter of personal taste on this.
Sound - The most horrid voice acting I've ever experienced in my entire life. The main character, hell, every character, just about made me want to go rip my ears off. Utterly bad. Beyond description even. The studio needs to shoot these people before they subject anyone else to their voice " acting ". This isn't voice acting , this is torture. This also ruins the entire story.
Storyline - Didn't get too far into it (past the warpdrive buy mission) to be able to experience it. See sound above.
Gameplay - While the upgrade system seems ingenious at first, I bet it most likely devolves into you flying into the one asteroid in each system searching for the "artifact". Each system also seems to be the same in construction (1 trade station, 1 asteroid, maybe an asteroid belt, and an undockable planet). Overall, it got extremely tiring and repetitive.
Summary - They tried to meld X3 with Freelancer. However, they did exactly opposite of what they should have done. Whereas Freelancer had superb visuals and fast action combat, this has bland visuals and a slower paced combat (the slower combat isn't necessarily bad mind you, tis a matter of taste). Whereas X3 had a tremendous trade/market system, this has a half assed dumbed down market system (think Freelancer but with some price fluctuation based on supply/demand). Basically, they nerfed the best parts of each individual game, put them together, and gave birth to a merely mediocre title.
60 out of 100 from me. Good try, but in the end your inexperience shows.
P.S. - Those voice actors must die horrible, painful, agonizing deaths, as their works have subjected a great many to just that.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Yeah, Darkstar was highly unimpressive. I hate the way you're limited to one ship. Sure, it may be modular, but it completely limits you with regards to the size of the ship. You can't just buy a pure cargo freighter, you have to slowly upgrade to get there, which means your ship is already going to have leveled into something other then what you were aiming for.
Besides which, I love to have a third person/external view in space combat games, like you could in freelancer. Although you can have an external view in this it completely lacks control.
