Alright guys, I'm trying to watch an XviD encoded video file.

I tried the latest binary by itself, also tried the (now outdated) Matroska pack, and the community codec pack.

All gave me the same results.

When the video file is opened my computer slows to a crawl, simple things take about 20 seconds to render on the screen, making my pc virtually useless, can't even bring up task manager to end the process.

If I remove XviD the file will play without video, sound comes through just fine.

Tried Media Player Classic and WMP 11 to try and open the file, both with the same exact results.

This machine was fine before I reformatted, so I'm on a clean install of XP Pro.

Any ideas? :\

Tried re-installing players and codecs several times, same exact result each time.

Same result with VLC.

Have updated codecs and everything, XP is updated, etc.

No idea wtf is wrong.. this machine was just working fine, then I reformatted, that'll teach me...

Any other ideas? Something is obviously fucked.

EDIT: Ok, it looks like it's actually any video... any video codec that loads fucks my computer up. Just had the same exact result on a quicktime file.

Time for another re-install I think.. goddamnit. Wink

Try to uninstall everything related to codecs.
And install latest ffdshow from http://ffdshow.faireal.net/#ffdshow
Hope that helps.

sounds more like a videocard driver problem
if codec poop is not the fault, try different video drivers
and check that you haven't forced antialiasing on
that's sure to slow your videos to a crawl on some render methods

Sounds like a good way to go.. As for codec packs, you should never bother with them, install VLC and no codecs.. VLC requires no external codecs!!

Perfectly respectable little machine, like I said, it ran perfectly fine before a reformat, wtf could have happened?

K-Lite CodecPack does have a "repair codecs" feature. This just might fix it.

http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

Download the "Standard" version.. After Install .. Look in Startmenu -> K-Lite
-> Config -> Tweak Tool

Think you better get a seperate tweaker instead of using K-Lite...

K-LITE IS THE DEVIL.. IF YOU DOWNLOAD IT YOU ARE SUBHUMAN AND NEED TO BE KILLED

Now thats over... there should be no need to ever install codecs, certainly not horribly OTT codec packs which quite often contain far more codecs than needed along with bundled "software" (adware/spyware etc..).. VLC *is* the player every respectable computer users should use, the only codec you should ever need or consider installing is Xvid.. but even that is not needed.

Now, I don't want to here any word of that K-Lite again..

Trust me, if VLC doesn't work its either your machine or the video file Wink.. More to the point, if you tried it with VLC and also with another media player + codecs.. and the video reacted in the same way with both, that shows the problem lies in either your machine or video..

I agree that this could be the case, yet another reason why VLC > Codecs Wink!

I must say that I use and trust SLDCodec Pack works great, so stooz when you get the codec prob solved go ahead and download both VLC and SLD codec pack. Smile

haha, its codec packs in general, and codecs too.. well.. by that i mean downloadable/installable codecs.. The fact that a media player has been created which incorporates everything you need to play video on a PC, its cross platform, works amazingly well under every circumstance (that I have personally experienced, but im sure you realise I have tested it very well Wink).. to me it makes any other codec pack/codec utterly pointless.. Why install pointless things? It will only cause conflicts..

haha, its just my elitist attitude crawling out :\.. I thought I was getting better too :'(!

i agree with syn, vlc is everything you need for proper divx/xvid/whatever video playing...

but i don't think it is in the codecs or in the vlc. i bet it is something with the video card driver that is wrong.

did you try to play any games after reinstall? if not, do try and see what happens.

also (this will sound very wild), try to unplug your video card, grab a vacuum cleaner and vacuum all dust that might be in the AGP or PCI-E slot. after that, reinstall video dviers and see what happens.

also, check your primary and secondary ide channels and that they do run in UDMA mode. when playing a video, it must be read from somewhere and if that happens to be a drive which is accessed in pio mode, it will use a lot of hardware interrupts to read from it and that will slow down the system to a crawl.

good luck!
