The reason we have religion today was becasue we lacked structure and morality. With out it, we would still be barbarians. But i agree that now, in this day and age; organized religion serves little purpose. |
What makes you think that if religion is removed, the structure and morality will remain intact?
You assume that humans have evolved beyond the need for religion, but have they really?
Are humans today that much different from the humans that lived before? |
I said organized religion, not religion as a whole. These are two completely different things. We still need to pass down our beliefs, and moral values, ethics etc.
And yes, humans today are way, way different from the humans than have lived before.
Humans are still evolving, learning etc.

I personally think religion is ok if people gain from it themself and doesnt harm other people cause of their religion/slash put their own religion upon others.
And i also believe religion is a side effect og civilization, but at the same time carries a big respondsibilty for the good and bad progress civilization has made. Which is why i can say that i share the viewpoint of Bigperm in most of his views.

This has changed in the later centuries because of the introduction of science into society. Individuals today learn about morality from society itself (be it their parents, friends, other people, etc), not from religion - that is why I believe morality and other factors will not change if you remove religion.
Why do you believe religion might be the cause of morality and structure because it has been around for a long time? Surely society itself has existed as long as religion, if not longer. |
But aren't western societies built on Christian values? The core ethical system is based on the Christian religion, aren't they? |
yes, indeed they are.
BUT whats funny -and like Immanuel Kant told, the moral system is or can be substained by itself, with no need of religion... Christian ethics, at the end, mix with "pure reason", which results in the system we live in.

Even tho Western society was built around Christian values...I dunno if they quite apply anymore.
Western society has evolved to tolerate religion. We havent allowed ourselves to be run by religion, which is good.
Even tho the US seems to be gettin more and more theocratic

I think the states has become more religious as well. More Christian like. Especially with some of their medical issues.

The US was founded on puritan and christian beliefs. Even tho they claim there is a separation of church and state, I think its bs. the majority of presidents (or maybe even all of em) were/are christian.
