I'm not entirely sure if this is a bitch or more a question of why.

Anyhow, why are things labelled as HDTV when clearly they aren't. Ok, so they might have come down from an HDTV source but as they've been compressed to hell with various codecs its hardly HD anymore.

Take for example "Weeds S02E01 *HDTV* *XViD*" from Lol.

Shouldn't it really just say xvid? thats all it is. The resolution is 624x352, the quality isn't HD.

Perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree, if I am, please feel free to correct me (not flame, something useful).

afaik the hdtv in the filename means that it's ripped from a hdtv source, not that the xvid has a *1080 resolution. But there still is a noticable difference in the resulting quality of the video, hdtv xvids look miles sharper than dsrips do. Granted I can't really tell the difference between hdtv and pdtv visually, but generally you can tell what to expect from the filename. Now I don't watch Weeds, so I can only speculate here, but maybe you fell for a renamed fake and the actual release looks in fact better? *shrugs*

Cheers for the reply.

I think you're right in terms of its an HDTV source rather than an hd rip. I looked at 2 different versions of the files and either way they're adding up to like 300 odd megs which is about standard for pdtv.

I think my main gripe is that its named as HD really shouldn't there be an HD release as well as the xvid? *shrugs*

There are also High Resolution Rips of HDTV shows available, they are labeled accordingly : Weeds.S02E01.HR.HDTV.AC3.5.1.XviD-DIMENSION . notice the HR in the dirname ?

"HDTV" in the release-name is absolutely legit and i think makes perfect sense. It "only" describes where the source origins from and what quality to expect (compare TS, TC, DVDRip in the movie-scene, etc.)
