I am mostly happy with this game as is, been a huge 4X fan since MOO. Now though I am old and have responsibilities, so Galciv 2 is too time-consuming. Looks amazing but I just don't have time for it. Weird Worlds is great fun but a little bit too shallow, I mean you can finish it in your lunch break.
SotS is the ideal balance imho, I'm not overly impressed by the graphics or the acting but I don't buy strategy games for those reasons. It does look ok with AA forced from the drivers, not great but it's not unplayably ugly like an old VGA game would be. Maybe someone will mod over those god-awful ship designs soon...

I've give Lighthouse Interactive credit for one thing, they do seem very dedicated to supporting the title. The list of changes in v1.1.1 is pretty massive. Let's hope they keep up such support in the future.

Because of the great reviews here i actually grabbed this game today, being a great Space Empires/GalCiv/Moo 2 fan.
Now, after my first half hours i am kind of disappointed by the lack of options...i want to actually do something other than move sliders or send ships around. Will i ever be able to build something on planets? I havent found any possibility yet, except the "build ship" option. How do i check happiness of the people on my planets; how do i know they will revolt, heck, is there anything more than the little square planet window with the 3-4 sliders?
Even the dreadful Moo 3 had way more depth and was more fun for me until now...but i havent seen really much of Sots yet.

hmm, you just want lots of sliders to get lost into. All the functions in this game are leading you to the tactical part of it, the space combat. It's like Homeworld, but instead building your fleet in real time, you build it and move it around the map in turn based mode. If you didn't like Homeworld, this game is not for you. And it's more strategy in this game than any slider can give you in any game, and it's not visible on the screen. The strategy is in your head. You have to visualise the goals, and your tactics. I found it that the game is very loosely based on numbers(at least on surface), i mean if your money is in green, you're ok. You don't have to worry about those 1.5 Cr needed to build yet another ship. You build, attack, build, attack, win the game, after 300 turns and 5 hours of play start another session, and do another race, and aproache the game in another matter. If you actually want to use your head and not rely on numbers, then get a go at this

So instead of having a "Space Empires game" i basically got a homeworld with turn based building/research? No building of planetary shields, farms, research centers, orbital guns, ground combat etc?
Geez, i expected some more depth. Base building, population management, politics etc. Something Moo 2 like. Bugger.
PS: I loved homeworld. Its just that this game was advertised as a 4x game, and some people here compared it to SE-V even. But this is more dull than empire at war, there at least i had the impression of building something on my planets...

Read what everyone else here wrote.
We ALL felt like that at first. Then we played it, went our way up the research tree, learnt the game mechanics.
Its way way deeper than it initially seems.

Check out my dreadnought
http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/5344/clipboard02ew0.jpg
But the MAJOR thing i dont like about this game is why cant i have all of my fleet in a huge battle , why the fuck does it have to be like 3 ships at once ie one dreadnought and two cruisers. He has like 5 or 6 cruisers attacking and i cant have more than two dreadnoughts!
I WANT A HUGE FLEET BATTLING IT OUT FUCK! lol

it works! the only annoying thing is that when you get a new tech, you can't upgrade the spaceships you have already =/
like in galactic civilization :s
