For those who didn't get the game to start at all, where instead it only flashed for a second:
It seems the game (or better, the Bink engine that displays the movies) does not like any changes to the default refresh rates of your graphics card. That means if you used some tool like RefreshForce to change those refresh settings, the game simply hangs. I haven't checked, but I think it'll suffice to set the 640x480 resolution to the default of 60Hz.
