And after the demo, I don't think people are near as interested. Unless they've significantly improved it, it wasn't that great.

I would guess its the same as the demo? Which is the best rome-city-civ out these days. Way better than Glory of The Roman Empire and definetly better than CivCity Rome (puke)

I looked at there site but i cannot find out what sort of game it is. Is it only building a large city and try to gain mony (like sim city). Or do you have to defend it also against other races?

If it's like Caesar 1, 2 and 3 it will have some military in it, but not that much, it's mostly city building, and making your citizens happy by giving them luxuries.
Resource management is different from sim city. It's not just about money, you also need to get timber to build furniture, clay to make pottery, iron to make swords for your soldiers, so resource management is more like the settlers than sim city.
