well, my ISP's news server is fucked up again, pretty much everything incomplete so i called tech support to complain. i'll just wrap it up shortly...
after about 20 minutes on hold i finally got some guy on the other line. told him that im having problems with my news and he asked, im not kidding, what news site im trying to access, msn or cnn? i just laughed and said 'youre not the brightest there, are you?' after a short pause he replied that i should be more specific. so i explained him that pretty much all headers on the telus' news server are incomplete, and wanted to know whats going on there. he said that he doesnt know anything about such news server. so i said that i would like to speak to someone who isnt a complete retard (those were my exact words). he told me to hold, so i waited.
probably another 10minutes later i heard a voice again. same guy...he said that nobody currently available knows anything about such news server. so i replied, quote, that this shit happens every few weeks/months, and why they cant maintain their news servers properly, and asked if all techs at telus are fucking idiots...
he asked me if i could please stop swearing and i answered that where im from, we dont start crying like little babies if someone uses bad language. he told me again to calm down and stop swearing. i kept swearing and calling them idiots and suddenly he said if i dont stop he will disconnect my internet service.
i just started laughing real loud for a little bit and said, that he doesnt have access to cancel my service with his fancy little headset he's wearing. then he told me that all conversations are monitored and recorded, and i asked, 'and? what are you trying to tell me with that?' a long pause after that and he said that he will forward it to his supervisor. i asked him if his supervisor knows whats wrong with the news server or if he's as dumb as he is? then he said that his supervisor will call me back, wished me a good day and hanged up...
that was about 45 minutes ago and he didnt call back yet. im thinking about calling them back, because it was so much fun and im still pretty pissed that their news server is fucked up again

supervisor actually called me back said that he listened to the conversation and doesnt like the way i talked to the 'so called tech guy'. i told him that i dont like telus' maintenance and he said that technicians are working on the issue. i asked when the problems will be fixed but he couldnt give me a straight answer. so i asked him if i get some credit on my account. 'we cant do that he replied'. why not i asked, and he said that i still have a working internet connection. i told him that i want some credit because im not getting everything im paying for, not to mention under educated stupid technicians he got mad at me again and told me to take it or leave it. i think he didnt have the patience to talk to an angry customer, so i told him that if i dont get everything im paying for i might be tempted to 'take' more i'm paying for. he asked me what i mean by that and i answered 'you'll see' and just hanged up
now, what i meant by that is, telus has a cap of 30gb (on my plan) but doesnt enforce it really. what im gonna do is download shit i dont give a fuck about 24/7 until the server is fixed. i have lots of xxx-passes where i can download shit from. which im gonna do. im pretty sure i'll reach the 300gb mark pretty soon and hope they'll give me a call about my excessive usage

Swearing and shit when calling customer tech support, seems a bit over the top imho.

They ought to hire experienced/ competent tech support guys. I remember when I called sympatico first it was some bitch with a fucked up accent and she didn't even talk to the 'headset mic' I had to keep asking her to talk louder or talk slower. Fucking annoying. And she kept asking silly questions. Like wtf! Second she really had no idea what to do. I was getting switched from one person to another and they had no fucking idea. Then I went to some network guru and when he started explaining shit it was like I was supposed to know everything. I don’t think I called tech support to just chat. It got me pissed. I cancelled my subscription. Which was a pain too. Fuck!

i dont think its over nothing. i'll pay for service which i dont get, and i dont agree in paying extra for the same service somewhere else. now, i know its not advertised (news access), but its available with telus and they should hire some decent technicians who can maintain it. this shit happens too often...

Ok, since I work as tech support for an ISP let me tell how you should behave if you want the best help.
First off, NO ONE likes a customer that calls and does nothing but swears, looks down on you or behaves badly. The only thing you will gain from that is that everyone at the tech support will NEVER EVER do anything more the necessary for you. EVER.
Same goes about knowing stuff, well we are humans too. We can't keep track of everything thats happening and whats avaible. Add the fact that people can make mistakes. Shit happens but you getting angry about it won't solve shit for you. Trust me, I've been working with this for a long time now and I know how it works.
Next thing, no ISP can ever guarantee that you will always 100% all the time have access to everything you want. If one site go down, well your internet connection is still considered working. It could be DNS problems, router trouble or something else that is completely out of control for your ISP. If the news server goes down. Well just relax, there will be technicians working on it. Sure you can call in and ask for a status or similar thats ok, but calling and BITCHING about it will just make the person you are talking with less caring.
The same goes for really rude customers, if you are rude and is that often during your calls your ISP may very well close your connection right away and mostly there is nothing you can do about it. The person you talked with DOES have the power to close it down within one week if he asks his boss and explains the situation. That is NOT a big thing to do. If you are behaving badly they can and will in time do just that.
To get help in the best way you can always be nice, understand that the person answering the phone just can't go downstairs and reboot something to fix your problem. It doesn't work that way. Most ISP's works like this:
1st line, customer support. Answers your calls, writes down the problem and sends it on to
2nd line. These guys can reboot servers, talk with the local technicians and get things done. They have almost no contact, if any, with customers under any circumstances.
If you piss of 1st line you can be damn sure they will give less information to 2nd line and thus making your case take longer to be solved.
So lets turn it around, you call in, explain your problem in a nice way, explains what it is about, answers the questions in a nice way and you can be sure that the person on the 1st line will like you. He will remember you as a nice customers, he colleagues will know you are a nice customer instead of an asshole. You will get more help, often beyond the scope of support if he knows how to fix it. If he has to create an issue for 2nd line he will fill it with all information avaible and it will be fixed faster, easier.
Everyone at your ISP will like you and almost hope you will call them because most customers calling are acting like assholes. Even ONE nice customer a day keeps them happy and going.
Problems can and will happen. Sometimes a server will go down more than 1 time, but if it happens as often as theirs you can be sure they have someone working on it to fix it for a long time forward. You calling and being pissed on someone that can't do shit about it won't make it go faster. There is also always a system in which they log all your calls so that there is a record about you and the next operator can read about previous calls. If he sees you have been rude a lot before he will dislike you to start with and do ABSOLUTELY nothing more then he has to.
Also, asking to talk with the boss will ALWAYS give you the same answer as you got from the first guy. The "boss" ("boss" is more accurate) can in theory order something extra if there are extreme circumstances but in general he has the same information as everyone else there and can't get more information then anyone else there either. He can't make an issue solve itself by simply talking to you. Add the fact that the boss too will be pissed at you for being so rude to the workers he is responsible for.
Be nice, behave, don't swear and you can be damn sure you will get the best support they can offer.
Otherwise, I fucking hope they will shut down your connection, make damn sure it takes atleast 18 days (very normal that it can take up to 18-30) before they remove their equipment at the station so another ISP can go in there and setup their stuff.
Remember this too, if you get too rude you get a warning about that and if its repeated he may very well hang up the phone and you'll have to wait again. The next person you get too will see why the previous hung up and keep that in the mind all the time during the conversation.
See this as tips from someone being in the exact same spot as the guy you talked to.
Edit:
Calling someone for a retard for not knowing about a certain news server is not good for yourself. He might aswell be new there and trust me, it takes atleast 2 weeks to learn about most stuff at an ISP even though you have training before starting to take calls.
So the next time, calm the fuck down and you will get a lot better support. He might even call the technician right away to get a status update for you. Remember that.

I have no idea what you work with, but if you ever had any customer relations-like work ever you would understand how it is. You don't like people going to you, bitching about something you can fix right away and calling you a retard do you? Wouldn't you hang up/walk away? Think about how YOU would react if it were you on the other end of that phone. Realize its a fucking human being on the other side.

Most people at tech support are not noobs, where I work most people have a lot of knowledge in what they are doing (sure some people are stupid and have nothing there to do, but most are skilled). Shutting down a customers internet connection is a very extreme thing to do but if the customer calls a lot and is angry, rude and so on. No tech support will like him and if he doesn't listen to what you say, are mad all the time they have nothing to do as a customer for the company.
The company I work for has one customer (what I know about) that has been banned from the regular tech support, if he ever has any problem he must call a special number to the HQ and ask for help there. If he is behaving badly they hang up the phone and let him call back when he's calmed down That guy went so far that he asked for a a few guys names, found their cell phone numbers and called them privately to get them to fix whatever the problem was and harass them. That guy is a fucking psycho, I'm happy to never have spoken to him. If he ever does something like that again the company will shut down all his services right away and he will not be welcomed back.
There is something called respect and I think you should respect all people. Especially someone that can help you with a problem you can't fix yourself.
