When it's the first of the month it usually means some time that month. Like ebgames.com has 11/1. They expect it to be released in November.

Half-Life 2 Pre-Loading

The second phase of the Half-Life 2 preload begins to Steam account holders today.
This will allow users to download the majority of the audio of Half-Life 2 in encrypted form. No purchase is required to pre-load Half-Life 2, but is required to activate the game. The moment the game is made available, those who have pre-loaded and purchased Half-Life 2 via Steam will be ready to start playing right away.

Didnt they say before that the game probably would go gold on the release date of Doom 3?

i reckon 3 or 4 preloads then an "unexpected" delay because of some unforseen bug that has absolutely nothing to do with Valve themselves and is obviously somebody elses fault ,then a preload patch then eventually the final files including the exe .. about Christmass

Yes! without being pretentious, i do work in the gamingindustry, an these are half-confirmd rumors. But my best guess would be early october.
Before the flaming, namecalling etc starts, let me again point out that these are rumors, but from pretty good sources, only time will tell if they are right!
I'm not trying to be cool and earn respect this way! this i just what the industry is buzzing about right now!

I bet they don't come out with a release date until they are very close to releasing it since a million idiots will scream "LYING SCUM!!!!! I WILL KILL YOU AND RAPE YOUR FAMILY GABE" if anything goes wrong and they have to delay it by a millisecond.
