In season 1 the mystery was always secondary to the character exposition. We had no idea what was going on, we could only theorize. It was also much more subtle and the number of unexplained type things were far more evenly spread out (so it didn't take center stage).
In season 2 that all changed. Things became stretched, knowing winks and lots, lots more overt unexplainable mystery type stuff was spammed into the show. They also made the mistake of forgetting the existince of season 1.
It's almost as if they opened pandoras box and we all saw it happen and can see it happening all around us but the writers? Well they just don't care - they are going about business as if pandoras box is still closed.
You can watch the same format in certain shows like friends over and over because at the end of the 27 or so minutes everything is pretty much back to normal again.
Not so in Lost. This is a series where it progresses (or at least, where it professes to have progressed) and that same format must adapt and evolve with the direction the show takes. but it doesn't! You can't keep recycling the same format and the same ideas and not expect people to get disgruntled at the lack of answers and so forth. ANyway that's my quickly written take on things.
And actually I expected a shit load more from the first episode. As a mid-season episode fine, I'll accept it, but as an opener? No thanks.
It's not about expectations it's about fulfillment (or lack thereof). It's also hard under these circumstances to just shut the hell up and simply enjoy the show as well, particularly when posting on a discussion forum whereby you inadvertently find yourself discussing it anyway...
As for analyzing the shit of it? Perhaps. But not all of us possess or indeed want to possess your cherry picking nihilistic idealogy.
People who say that this season opener didn't reveal enough are just being weeny IMHO. How can you say that revealing :a)who are the others and how they live. b)what happened to jack, Kate and Sawyer c)where do the polar bears come from d)who was Jack's wife dating| is not enough? seriously, i can't think of another episode that shined that much light on so many of the shows questions!(not to mention that they also explained what do THE NUMBERS mean.)

A) We don't know what unites them and what purpose do they serve.
B) We don't know what the others want from them.
C) Where?
D) C'mon, who gives a fuck? Nude pics of Kate plz.
I am somewhat critical to that video. hansoexposed.com, is that an official site from the creators of Lost, or just another fansite? The video does not show the Hanso guy we have seen in the show, and his acting is somewhat... dubious?
Having to watch some random video on YOUTUBE or a random website to find out what the numbers mean just seem totally bullshit to me.
When they explain what the numbers really mean, it will be on the show.
The site and the video are real and were created by the writers of the show as a part of the "lost experience" game, if you don't know what it is google or wiki for it.
Also, you don't seem to comprehend the notion of progressive storytelling. Like I said, they never really reveal anything even when they say they do. And yet even when something can be construed as a revelation they throw about 50 other unexplainable (often interchangeable) mysteries right back at ya.
And this is all done inbetween stretched moments of melodrama and stupidity. They were more interested in playing 'house' than actually surviving.
Yawn another boring episode.. i wish they would stop with the flash back shit trying to stretch out a 40 minute episode and actually reveal something useful...
If it wasnt for the fact i was bored shitless i think i would of stopped watching lost by now.
Actually this wasn't a bad episode, I kind of liked it.
Spoiler:
the best bit was seeing that dude land on jin's car
apart from that nothing good really happend.. just lots more vague shit and no closer to finding out anything that is going on on that island... its been over 2 years and we are still without a clue what is going on...
I hate it when they focus too much on the flashbacks. They need to tell us more and give us more action!
I like the flashbacks, they add depth to the characters and story. The whole thing about Lost is that it is all about mysterious and not necessarily explaining them in 5 minutes, then you wouldn't have a show anymore, now would you?
I really liked the conversation between Jack and Ben at the end.
