Accepting change and not liking a crap battle system is not the same thing. The main problem is that the new battle system isn't as good as KOTOR. This is basically playing FFXI with newb party members who run off and aggro mobs. I'm only 5 hours in, but I've had to turn the Gambit system off because they will aggro mobs on two occassions very often: 1) Mob runs off, Newb AI will chase them 2) When they attack mobs, they do so without considering that some discreation is necessary to not aggro surronding mobs. KOTOR allowed you to turn the game quasi turn based by allowing you to pause and give commands, and the ability to actually totally control your other party members, something this game SORELY needs. The result is a battle system that is a mindless, uncontrollable mess. The battle system is basically a dumbed down MMO. And it's not like turn based is automatically "old and stupid." Grandia still has the best battle system of any RPG, FFX despite the crap story and crappier voice acting, had IMO the best FF battle system of them all, and KOTOR with the queue system plays out like its turn based. I like the story in FFXII, although it really hits a huge lull after the impressive opening minutes, but this is by far the worst battle system I've had to deal with in a offline MMO in recent memory.

You do realize there is a "flee" button right? In case you're worried about some party members attacking some near by creatures you dont want them to attack.

They wont do anything as long as you hold down the "Flee" trigger. They will just run along side with you.

Also I dont have that problem at all, and its because I have my Gambit system for party members set the correct way, you can give them tons of different commands, like not have them wonder off fighting monsters when you dont want them to.

You can also shut gambit off pretty quickly and easily.

The battle system is not uncontrollable like you're saying. Me thinks you just have the settings wrong as far as your gambit settings.

So far I have total control of every single party members and since we only get to control three of them at a time. Its way easy to control.

Just change your gambit settings because you probably have it all messed up.

I think its SALAMITE. Ill have to check again. All I remember is something started to cast Firaga - thats all I needed to see. I then slapped on LIBRA, targetted it, and say 46K hitpoints. I knew then it was time to go.

No I know about the passive/aggresive enemies. I meant targetting even aggresive enemies, but they are Elite Mobs or some such, like SALAMITE and PINEAPPLE. PINEAPPLE wasnt bad, but man was he a long fight for me.

Button presses only mean something if your character has the ability to pull off a QUICKENING more than once, or you have multiple people with QUICKS available.

Basically, when the screen pops up - hit the button for the person you want next in line. If it whites up (goes from grey to white) and no buttons are available, hit R2 to reshuffle. It should pop someone up. Keep hitting R2 until someones button lights up, and then hit it again. The faster you do it, the more time you will have to execute QUICKS. The more QUICKS, the more sick damage.

I've gone head to head with pallebrun before.... and yeah, it's frustrating hehe;) (no offence man).

But I do agree with some of his point here.

Where is the humor, FF XII takes itself too ceremonious.
I find myself just rushing into battle and let the Gambits do the rest...
I don't get a close up look of the enemies.
Too little equipment and tresure to be found! In other FF games, I found LOTs of money. in FF XII, it's so hard to find..
The Lisence upgrades are mostly uninspiering.
The minimap is hard to navigate with. (I'm finding myself pressing 'select' A LOT, and there is a little loading every time I do).
How does the Mist spells/combo work? I once got a 9 hit, but have no idea how?!

Still - I play it alot (22 hours so far), and enjoy it.

supino the character balthier has alot of humor dialogue perhaps it is too subtile for you . i am very glad that money is hard to get it stops you buying everything and making it easy also in games like ff and gta it starts off hard to get money and by the end of the game you have a million because you just dont spend it. ive got 12 hours dispatched

erh, money is hard to get?
you people probably dont understand that youre supposed to sell the loot.
it makes much more sense, monsters dont drop money, but you can sell the loot (and youre supposed to).
also i find balthier's sense of humour great, very subtle and ironic, plus he s a very charismatic character especially because of the good voice acting.
btw i never found the humour in previous ff parts to be funny at all, most of it was very childish and uninspiring, the schoolgirl anime type of humour.

lol Whats funny is that I also thought money was way to hard to get. Until I found a little moogle 10 hours into the game that gave me a tip to sell the Loot for money.

I had a shit load of "loot" to all kinds. That gave me a crap load of money, more then enough to buy the expensive Magics and Weapons. I really like the Loot system now. It took me to read a tip from a moogle to figure it out, but atleast I know what the Loot is for now. Smile

I know about loot.

But it confused me a little that the teleport stones are under the "Loot" category..

Sell all loot you say? Are you sure you can't craft items from the loot at some point? wouldn't that make sense?

I bought an item for 18.000 from the bazzar (i got it enabled early on, but couldn't afford it until now), and enemies drops a lot more now. Both weapons and loot.

@BigBasher - yeah, Balthier is the cool character, agree.

Are you sure it wasnt for 22000. That would be the SCHOLARS MONOGRAPH if Im not mistaken.

And yea, youll miss out on some stuff if you dont talk to mobs.

there are 5 monographs or so, they all cost between 18k and 25k and will add more items to the loot tables of specific enemy categories. one adds new things for all undead, another for all dragons and plants, etc. they do cost a lot but it's usually worth it.

and about the loot, you can not craft things with it, so just sell it all. it's just that if you sell specific loot you will unlock bazaar items. those bazaar items might be rare and pretty cool things. basically, it allows you to get cool things if you find rare items. so just sell it all except the teleport stones.
you can buy teleport stones on leisure craft airships btw, just in case you run out anyway Smile

and about people complaining they dont have to do anything with the gambit system as the game plays itself... yeah, and that's a good thing. you have to keep in mind, those are trash mobs, you will still need to do things in boss battles. was it really that exciting in old FF games to get into a random battle, click attack with every character until the enemy is dead? no it wasn't, now you just don't have to do that anymore and I like that.

but to each his own I guess, if people just don't like the battle system, well then that's tough luck! you'll just have to wait for the next RPG with classic console rpg battles. seems to be rare now though, with valkyrie profile, ffxii and the next tales. I believe there's a new shin megami tensei coming out though Smile

Surray. you have a good point about gambits. I take back what I said before - I love tweaking and perfecting them now Wink

It just annoys me that i manually need to charge (MP) all characters. I do not have a gambit called "self - MP < 20 %". And gambits are hard to find as I've bought all available in the shops.

oh - and how do you know what type of MONOGRAPH you own?

Thanks for the loot tips btw.

the monograph you bought will be mentioned in the key item category in your inventory. selecting it will tell you what enemy types it enhances.

and yeah, some gambits are pretty hard to find... I'm still looking for one that targets blind poisoned or confused allies

that battle is quite tough. remedies work wonders there but you can't buy any yet so you propably don't have a lot. feel free to silence it to keep it from casting confusion and some other annoying stuff if you have that spell.
if you really can't beat it, there is supposedly another way to your destination through that jungle, so this is an optional boss.

dont worry, i reached all the way to the last boss in the game, at arond 56 hrs.
not had a single prob or glitch so far, i m pretty sure this is the final release.

this is an amazing game, definitely on the niveau of 6 and 7 and its more challenging than both of em.

Oh wow. Did you do many of the marks? Im on my way to Drakklor. About how far into it would you say? The story seems to be on its way to wrapping up - which would be a shame. My fault though as I've played the damn thing nonstop.

i hardly did any marks as i found em to be a waste of time, instead i just trained my chars and bought most of the magic, cleared almost everything on the license board.

anyway, i finished the game now at 61 hrs, a truly great game with a great story.
i hope the next FFs will follow with a battle system as fun as this one.

hmm no not that epic, but it's a good story. I liked FFVII a lot, finished it several times, and I really like this too.

Well you can't really ask more of a game then over 60 hours of actual enjoyable gameplay. Smile

I'm working religiously on getting as many marks done as possible, I've done about 20 so far, and I'm working on a few other side quests. I just couldn't bring myself to rush through the main plot and ignore everything else!

Although I was aiming to have this finished before Gothic 3 comes out, hehe. That'll have to wait.

FF 6,7 and 12 are my fav FF games now, gameplay wise FF12 is easily the best and most fun of em all, story-wise FF6 and 7 are more character driven than 12, but the story of 12 is alot more mature, intriguing and logical (within the bounds of an rpg). Think of the FF tactics storyline, but deeper than that.
I like the fact that the party in FF12 isnt going alone against the enemies head-on and saving the world, moreover they are part of the whole war.
Of course they play the most significant role in the conflict, but in contrast to other FF games they wouldnt stand a chance alone.

Anyone having issues with the minimap that you access by pressing select. I have had the game freeze a number of times when accessing it, you can tell it's going to freeze because the screen area around the map gets distorted. Other than this the game is amazing.

Well I had quite a few slowdowns when changing area and opening the minimap. But I suspect that was due to having burned it on a DVDRW, as when I burned it on a regular DVD it was fine.

Yea I burned it on a regular 16x sony dvd-r as well as a different brand 8x dvd-r and both do the same thing. I'm stumped and it sux cause i don't really wanna use the mini map cause if it's been a while since i saved and it freezes. Crying or Very sad
