Actually it says Direct X 0 not installed. |
Set autorun.exe in windows 2000 compat mode. That worked for me. Rerun autorun.exe afterwards.

First of all, I'd like to say it's pretty hilarious to get in the "cockpit" view and play. All you can see on your hood are low res reflections that update maybe twice a second. How come some games just totally ruin the motion blur effect? They just can't seem to get it right. Maybe they should look at PGR3 or something. If I didn't want to see the game I'm playing I'd just like....not play it. I guess the good thing is everybody that doesn't have monster computers can run it at the lowest settings and it'll look just as good as it does on high settings with motion blur on. Does anybody else find it odd that game after game, developers still refuse to realize that people use widescreen resolutions? It would be tight if I could play a new game in native res without searching on forums to find a widescreen hack. And does anybody actually play games using their right hand on the up, down, left, and right arrow keys anymore? I thought it was pretty standard to use w,a,s, and d with your left hand. But it is just a demo. And I know it must be pretty hard to implement something as advanced as changable controls in time for a demo to come out.

Ditto. I was never really into the ug type they pushed before, but atleast the games were fun! This is plain bad. I just hope EA doesn't kill the NFS franchise over the poor sales this shit is going to have, like they almost did after NFS Porsche.

motion blur always sucked in this game. it helps to make the game look worse at a cost of greater gpu usage (lower fps), so it really shouldn't be on at all.
i'm kinda surprised by some of the responses here, as i really didn't think it was that bad. i know EA sucks and all, and its cool to bash them for whatever they do. but i felt the demo left me longing for more; meaning it was pretty good.
the fact that you race with a crew makes it slightly more interesting, and i like how they stroke my ego for every passing second that i'm ahead of the pack. right now they can take out some opponent in front of you, which i think is kinda cool.
the canyon mode is without a doubt a great addition, and its probably the greatest thing that this game has going for itself.
the handling is superb because its not too arcadey like the previous few NFSs and not too real at the same time either. i mean, you can actually feel the weight of some of the cars as you go around a corner, and still do some crazy impossible moves. i remember nfs:mw made the ford gt feel like a real life mini around corners. there was no 'feel' factor in it.
what i think is useless is the stupid little car designing thing. i just don't care for it any more, and just wana get on with the races every time i see it.
we'll have to see how the final version is though. if they add some stupid redundant thing like "drive to this place 10000000 kms away for a race" which they had in UG and UG2 (i think), that just made it soo goddamn boring. you'd be driving around the city more often than actually racing (which IS infact what i think i probably did lol).

^ yep, i mean that honestly. i actually have nfs:mw installed right now too. all the cars handle in basically the same way. there's very little distinction.
when they added this muscle, exotic and tuners thing, they really made them stand out from one another. of course its sort of early to tell right now, since we havn't seen the rest of the pack, but its a promising start.

I didn't feal any change in handle with my controller... Handling is the same arcade stuff we like (or don't... I do). Handling has never been an issue with the NFS series, as they have allways been ARCADE racers (except the excellent Prosche Unlimited).

Worst NFS ever made... looks like shit, drift mode is just a joke.
Most Wanted was rather good ( it wasn't the best NFS but it wasn't bad ) and now this ...
But i'm sure 10 year old kids will like it.
to EA : Why the hell are you doing this ? Just take NFS Porsche Unleashed, give it next-gen graphics , more cars and you have the best car game ever... it's so easy !

Well I just played it. Now I see why everyone is complaining. This game is utter shit. Most Wanted smashes this game. This is a huge step backwards from Most Wanted.
Maybe its just the demo and the full game will be different, who knows. But this Demo sucks.

Actually, anyone who had been looking through the NFS forums, an EA representative had actually had us all coming for this. He kept on saying how EA wouldn't focus on the demo rather than the full game on the PC. And the PC demo DOES feel rushed. I'll only give the full game a download (pre-order cancelled, obviously) just to see if the demo was rushed and the full game is actually a tiny tad bit worth the trouble. Here's the review of the demo I posted in NFSUnlimited:
Quote: | I'm gutted. Utterly disappointed.
I've already cancelled my pre-order on this game, as it doesn't seem quite worth the trouble after trying the demo.
I'll give you my review, nonetheless.
Graphics & Performance: 1024x768, Trilinear, No AA. Lagging as hell. Rediculous performance and I'm on an Athlon 64 3700+ (@2.5GHz), 2GB RAM and a 7600GT. The graphics are... improved. Is it obvious? Not quite. The atmosphere is still right for racing (yes, night is when the street racing happens), but motion blur is seriously overapplied and the reflections on the cars are horribly shiny.
Sound: I'm not one to judge engine sounds, but the game in a whole sounds nice. I'd love some even stronger music during the Canyon Duel, but that's only minor.
Handling: During circuit and canyon duel? Way. Too. Easy. Doing the whole Canyon without the slightest of break and taking the sharpest of turns doing 70MPH is not even close to exciting. Circuit feels even more ridiculous because the lack of sharp turns will let you do a constant 90. That is, if you avoid hitting someone or something randomly. I just *love* the way traffic cars fly off as if hit by a train. Well, no, I don't. The worst part of handling is drifting. The new mechanism disappointed from the first moment I pressed the left arrow. Only meaning to take the first turn gently, my car was quickly horizontal and hitting the wall. If you go slowly, you'll probably be going from wall to wall, while if going faster, drifting gets much easier, and you'll be doing the whole lap again with a 65MPH average. The road while drifting really feels as if having no friction. The car's front goes from side to side like crazy, by just switching the arrow you're hitting. And I'm not talking about holding the arrow, I'm talking about hitting it, tapping it, call it however you like. Yeah. Not that good. Not at all good.
AutoSculpt: It shows a lot of promise, although the zones provided in this demo were quite limited. From what we've seen in videos though, the possibilities are many, so it's one thing (maybe the only) to look forward to.
Canyon Duel: Exciting? Yes. It was. Maybe the best part of the whole game. Trying to stick to the tail of your opponent sharp turn after sharp turn is nice. Nice enough? No. Not when I'm taking the turns doing 75. A stupid concept? Quite. No racer does this for points. The canyons could have been longer, much longer, and instead of two races it could be one race on equal terms.
Conclusion: LaPierre really knew what he was saying. He really made the impossible, possible. He really firetrucked a series that managed to appeal to an even wider audience with the introduction of tuning, customisation, and managed to please a lot with day racing and exotics in MW. The gameplay and handling itself is enough to ruin the whole experience.
Is the demo an actual representation of the full game? I surely hope not. Let's just hope that we have another Juiced case, and not forget that Smoothie had mentioned the priority the development team had given the full game. If you ask me, the demo may have been released rushed and unoptimized due to overwhelming community pressure. Farfetched idea, sure, but EA wanted to please the masses. And talking about Speed, that's all this game delivers. You must have a really serious Need For Speed to play this game, because you're going to receive a shitload of it, and nothing else.
Once again, I'm utterly disappointed. |
The only thing I have to add is that I stand corrected about Canyon Duels. Obviously Touge Racing or whatever it's called uses the same concept. I still think the Canyon is way too small however and done on a 70MPH average. Ridiculous.

We're not talking about gameplay improvements. We're talking about optimization. And that CAN happen between demo and final and it has happened for quite a number of games.
And NecroViolator, it's obvious you haven't even gone to the Options or Controls screen. They're both there for the demo, too.
