deus ex, err, no thanks. Borderline rpg.
I like both equally. Single player rpgs like the final fantasy series usually offer the better storyline, and visuals. Course Squares visuals are always top notch even compared to other rpgs. However the online element offers more allies to play with, and most often a bigger world.
On the one hand, the epic storylines, cinemas, and over the top spells in final fantasy and xeonsaga are hard to beat, on the other hand attacking a dungeon or epic encounter with a whole slew of your friends is also exciting. And anyone who thinks its just hacking some target dummies with your buds obviously have not gotten very far, for there are many epic encounters that require devision of your attacks, where one group of people are doing something different then the others. It is these encounters that most fail at because they do not work together, so when you are successful it makes you feel good that you accomplished something working together.
Many are put off by the monthly fees, so be it. However the current tech needed for such online worlds requires it. Guild wars is nice in that it remains free while still allowing you to easily socialize in cities with many others, form groups to fight together in mission and dungeons(explorable areas), and offers great pvp multiplayer with its excellent balance system. Sadly it cant cover the massive battles games like WoW and Everquest feature (anyone remember the coldain ring war?)
Guild wars is also pretty much the only game that can do both, especially with nightfall released. With the configurability and control of heros, most missions that were to difficult to solo with mindless henchmen are now doable, so through 3 continents, 70+ missions and tons of explorable territory, you can do it with or without friends. Perfect for those of us who have lives/job and like to play but cant always be on at optimum play times.

Well it's hard to live up into a world of some MMO game, cos everybody RUNS everywhere. I mean, in what world do people RUN everywhere? If i see people running i amagine there's something bad happening somewhere close and i might get owned so i run as well. But in MMO games everybody runs everywhere, and so I cant really get into character. In gothic, oblivion, every RPG since baldurs gate, i have walked everywhere. It makes the game seam more real.
Also, in MMO's everybody talks like people in this world, like people online, like "IMHO" and "FTW" and "noob" and stuff. I mean, imagine George R. R. Martin writing the next instalment of a song of ice and fire in which Jamie Lannister goes up to Cersei and says "you n00b IMO". It just kills the feeling. There are players who actually talk like their character but anyone else is just plain unamaginative.

Now this I totally agree on. The lame ftw/noob comments really ruins it. It's also quite anoying with the hardcore players who keep camping the good spots 24/7 to powerlevel their 2000 alts.
shitloads of new stuff in my pc. Cant keep track of it all.

Quite simple; Single Player RPG.

mmo's are designed to suck the money out of you and that kills it for me every time. there's nothing like feeling your enjoyment is whoring yourself out to a corporation. not mention you can't finish, you can't beat, you can't stop playing mmo's if you want to complete one.
not mention the fact sp games tend to have far far better gfx & level design.

SP RPG all the way! |
In mmorpg games you can learn that many people at the age of 20 can be more immature than a 12-13 y old player.. |
Hahah, that is so very true! However I have found that Phantasy Star Universe is a great online game for me. Aside from the monthly fee. However if you have an income $9.99 a month is not alot to dish out. You do not have to worry of keeping up with the no lifers who typically arserape online games to death and ruin the experience for other players. Basically since you do not have to worry of them it ends up fine in the end. They cannot ruin the experience for you. As said before you do not have to keep up having a constant level with individuals, nor do you have to worry of playing consistently. You can play for half an hour or an hour and feel as if you've accomplished something within game toward your character. You choose when you wish to play and when to stop. These points make it an alright game for me.

problem with most MMORPG these days is that you can remove the M from massively multiplayer, since so much of the fuckin game is instancied .. bring me back MMORPGS with dungeons filled with people, queues for quest item, now that was funnier than those molten core shit when you will never meet someone else than your raid group. Fuck wow, fuck instances.

Both. Even though the longest I have played a mmorpg for was about 6 months (SWG. Planetside). Most of them I give up after I max the lvl cap after a month or two (CoH, EQ2, D&D).
Social aspect of mmorpgs is what keeps me playing when inevitably you have seen all the mmorpg has to offer. After that its just a glorified chat room. The expansion packs/updates for mmorpgs are so few and far between that you clock the game (so to speak) in a month or two you then often have to wait months before more content is added. It gets very boring.
With SP RPGS theres some finalization at least. Once you beat the game thats usually it, and move on to the next.

next time when you're using voice comm, count how many times people say "lol", "rofl" and "noob" out loud. You'd be amazed how many times you hear those words...
What i'd really wanna see, is a real living world where you could make a living as a blacksmith or selling potions and spells or something. Like you don't need to fight huge bosses and other creeps to reach the level cap, just be specialized in something. Like as a blacksmith, when you reach a certain level you could make the most awesome weapons on the server that could not be found anywhere else on the server.
I know it's possible in WoW, but just not to the extent i would like to see. Creating whole industries would be cool, make a guild full of max lvl miners and blacksmiths that sell the best weapons on the server for insane prices ^^
"YARR! We be stealin' yer games an plundrin' yer gold!" sez the pirate.

I use to be the biggest anti-MMO in the world, till a buddy kept talking about all the cool stuff in COH/COV (City Of Heroes). After listening to this rant for months I finally broke down and bought COH/COV & Guild Wars. I am now a COH/COV whore. Play Guild Wars once a month and stop playing all of my SP RPG's. Comparing MMO and SP gameplay is tough for me because I enjoy both but at this moment I just enjoy my COH/COV so I lean MMO.

every MMO should be without levels whatsoever. Really. It should just present the possiblity to LEARN some skills in game from trainers and stuff. No levels. That way, everyone selects what skills they want - if they want to be able to fight with swords, magic or be a theif or a compilation like fighter theif but only via skills. So everyone would be the same except for equiptment and skills they learnd or got better at - ONLY via learning ingame from teachers or if they use it a while they learn a "barbaric" type of that skill. Like fighting is "good great master" but if you learn it only by yourself it turns to "barbaric" or something cos you dont have the straining a pro has.
So if a person makes a blacksmith theif character he could steal raw steel and make swords with them, but he has to buy the stuff like anvuils and things, well - put simply - a MMO thats NOT focused on levels and fighting

IMO problem with MMORPG is the lack of RP. They should advertise those games like MMOG. Even european Argent Dawn server on WoW sucked ALOT! There were some hardcore roleplayers but the majority was always completely out of character. That being said, i prefer single player because of the immersion (and also because I hate the endless grindfest).
@alas.away I really like your idea for a MMORPG. Eve has a leveling system that looks like that, you should check it out.
