Yes, you need to move a file from the system folder in your VCD 8 installation folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Virtual CD v8\System) file is vc8api.dll (or vc8api64.dll if you use win x64)

I just moved it to C:\Program Files (x86)\Virtual CD v8.

Well, the patch v1.9 is useless to me. It doesnt help at all. Made absolutely no difference. I still run out of memory regardless of where I put my swap file on drive c or my secondary drive. Heck, I even disabled my pagefile and put 2 pagefiles on my 2 drives. This was a no go. This happens between 30 to 60 minutes of play when I try to save.

I guess its back to the drawing board for the PB. It was too good to be true. Sad

I really enjoy this game but this problem is causing me and rest of the many gamers too much aggravation. Im just hoping there will be a patch by the time the US version hits the stores but I wont hold my breath.

I feel bad for the ppl who bought this game. This is like a slap to the face for them. A true Gothic fan wont give up but the waiting is gonna continue until they fix this problem - if this massive problem is ever fixed. Question

And you guys know that there are more problems as well. I dont care about the performance optimizations until they fix this memory leak. This is the most important problem they gotta take care of otherwise Im done with this game and other ppl as well.

Seems like a lost cause now after this so called "patch" considering that has been my only problem besides the minor stuttering (btw reduced thanks to patch 1.8 which actually helped a lot) and this on a Athlon 64 x2 4200+ @ 2.5ghz, 2gb of ram, 500gb sata II + 320gb ata drives, Audigy 4 Pro soundcard and eVGA Geforce 7900gt 512mb @ 650 core 1600mhz memory. And I might add with all drivers updated.

Its not over until the developers say its over meaning they continue fixing the bugs or they just stop which means this game is a failure from a technical point. I do think once the bugs are fixed it will be the game we have been craving for but for now its a bug ridden mess. I am a hopeful person though it may take time until the game is polished then we will see what Gothic 3 is all about. The game that shouldve been and couldve been great is still patches away from this promise.

But we shall see what happens. Smile

Dunno if its mentioned before but, ace2kx in the meantime use a program called "G3starter". When you get out of memory error this program makes sure you dont lose your save. It enables you to free up some memory, save the game properly. Exit G3, start G3 again and load the save which crashed.

Notes:

Use Shirons Tool to bypass the "smartheap - out of memory"-bug completely.
This tools is a Gothic Starter and it reserves some memory (choose 100 MB).
When the error occurs

a) change to the desktop via Alt-Tab
b) release the reserved 100 MB with the button "Speicher wieder freigeben"
c) push the "retry" button on the smartheap requester
d) Alt-tab back
e) Gothic can finish the save game process.
f) At last close gothic and start again.

Thanks a lot woozap bro. I thought there wasnt a proggie like this. Shouldve checked the entire thread. Very Happy But boy does it help. Had to save after a big battle with a bunch of ogres then it crashed but thankfully this program saved me litteraly. lol

At this rate we might as well have good ppl like this - independant programmers make a patch for us instead of PB. Until then, this is probably the best solution for now.

@ gold24 - try getting the German clone DVD if ya can. Its the best version so far as you can update it to patch 1.09. So far as of today there is no crack yet. I assume the next patch is finally the one they will crack by the time the US version comes out, thus finally fixing the memory leak and improving performance of the game.

Not for me. I freed the memory but it still didn't allow me to return to the game. Well, then pretty much everything stops... since you can't set the memory again until you close the game. Crappy stuff if you ask me.

yep same for me. i try to go back into game but black screen, save dioesnt continue. 1.09 doesnt work for me either and I have original. what a disgrace this is turning out to be. yeah ok they rush games, have bug etc but when the patch dont fix it, you have to raise eyebrows.

Regarding the entire VCD thing... I followed the instructions (from multiple forums including the *.txt to the 'T'. I have it mounted to my physical drive and the VCD was made properly using the instructions and template. The vcd8api.dll file was also moved as to not cause problems. For me the problem is the first time I do it (i've done the entire process of making VCD to mounting about 4-5 times) it restarts my computer on the very first execution. After booting back up once everything is remounted it will just say the CD is not in the drive 10-20 failed executions later. I am currently attempting to use this maneuver while running patch v1.09. Anyone have any insight? Smile

U did everything allright, just first put the vc6 into the virtual drive, wait 'till the error pops up, eject then, insert the file into ur first physical drive and the game will start. If not repeat this 'till the game starts Smile This way the game will start easier. Don't think locking the drive and setting the speeddrive to 1 matters but maybe at ur system it does, u can also give it a try.

Well i disabled all my virtual drives except the one from vcd8 of course, don't think that it matters but just give it a try. ( with anno 1701 it does f.e. ) Then mount into that drive at first afterwards into ur first physical one. Just check it out Smile I also renamed the vcd8api.dll file instead of removing it but it works the same i think.

Whatever made you think that the US version will be the answer to all your complaints?, it'll have Tages aswell, look at Anno 1701 if you don't believe Aspyr uses Tages.

Hey guys,

Try this if you are experiencing the save bug crash like me. Sorry if this has been posted before.

Its in German, but its easy to understand when you look at the pictures. You have to deal wtih the boot.ini file and gothic.exe file and download a couple of programs. I was nervous at first when I rebooted after I did this little hack, but my PC booted normally.

So far I havent had that cursed memory leak error after 3 hours of continuous play and saving for 12 times so far. Also, remember dont run anything in the backround such having open browsers, antivirus etc. You can close explorer.exe if you'd like as every bit of memory counts with this game. Then run windows task manager -> File -> new task aka run -> then type explorer, and the taskbar will appear again. You can use the memory leak boot.ini method with the G3Starter.exe proggie just in case it crashes so at least you know you got a backup if the crash shows its ugly head again. Smile

Hope it helps someone here.

Bugs in the game are not protection related. i think ur right when u say the game will stay buggy but time will learn. With the latest patch the game runs much better so maybe they'll fix a lot when it comes out. It probably won't Sad

On topic: ace2kx nice suggestion but unfortunately doesnt save me from the crash bug, still happened after about 1 hour of play and yeah I always boot the games from task manager with only essential xp services running. and like I said before when I try to alt-tab back into game after using G3starter, it doesnt continue the save.

still in a way the save game is what gets me some sleep as I usaully sit up late to play gothic and only go to bed after it crashes for the 2nd/3rd time and its about 3-4am. if it didnt crash would probably not notice the time and be playing until 6am. Wink

Well that problem i also have, the point of the program is not making you able to continue play but making you able to save the game. If you close the game by using the task manager you can probably still load the save which made the game crash no?
