i feel more comfortable installing a mod chip than flashing firmware, so the 360 mod chips have only come on the market this month and there are already loads of chips to choose from, the scene truly is fast in making them.

I've been doing some reading up on this, and it seems that you can buy a already flashed Samsung or Hitachi drive and just place that into your xbox 360 and straight away play backups, is this true?

okay maybe i will just do this flash you talk of, it's just i don't want to fry an xbox 360, it's seems quite difficult to flash it.
Tell me this please, can you play on xbox live with originals and backups
i hear from some people you can't play back ups on xbox live and some say you can
Also is it possible to turn off the flashed drive on the fly so if you were to go on xbox live with an original game, there would be no way of detecting if you had flashed your firmware?

youve got more chance of "frying" your dvd drive from a bad solder than you do of screwing up flashing it. Long as you get that key ur golden you can easily get a replacement drive if you screw ur 360 up flashing.

It's freakin' easy, yes backups work also on xbox live, no you can't switch it on/off but you can reflash your drive to the original firmware

I've read you should take that with a grain of salt as it seems MS still found a way to see if you did a mod or not.... only the future will tell what they know and will do

In my opinion it's more safe to use a mod chip, the advantage is that you can just switch it off when you go online. A flashed firmware cannot be detected now, but who knows what'll happen in the future.

These chips will be more aimed at people that don't have the knowledge or full understanding to flash the Xbox360 DVD drive, and hell some of them might not even have a PC and are getting it via a friend. They might appear useless to some of us, who can indeed flash our own drives and have a good understanding of it, but because they are useless to some of us doesn't mean they are outright useless to everyone.

I've seen some mod chip stores selling xbox 360 Samsung and Hitach dvd drives, are these the replacement drives you people are talking of?
Can't these drives be flashed before you put it into the 360?
If so mod chip stores could do the flash for you and you just insert it in to your xbox 360

You need your own key from your 360 drive to be injected into the new drives FW. If you dont have your key your screwed, its that simple

Sorry about all the questions, but to get this straight, so your saying even with those replacement drives they need to be put first into your xbox 360 and then once booted up you will get a FW then to flash that FW with the extreme firmware that allows backup you would need to do the mod.
That means all i would have to do is get an xbox 360 and remove the current hard drive and send it to a mod chip store and get them to flash it with the extreme firmware, is that possible?
Or am i totally being dumb?

DVD Drive, not Hard Drive. They would have to make a copy of the Firmware from the DVD Drive, then extract the "key" from the Firmware by using a hex-edit program. After that they'd insert a new DVD Drive and modify any particular Firmware they are going to flash it with using the "key" they took from the original drives Firmware. It has to match the Xbox360's. Some notes:
Your current original DVD Drive for your Xbox360 has a specific key.
Your Xbox360 also has a key.
Those keys are identical. If they do not match, the Xbox360 will not work.
If you change the drive of the Xbox360 you MUST copy the key which is taken from the Firmware of the ORIGINAL DVD Drive.
You get the key by extracting sectors from the original DVD Drives Firmware.
Just a quick example:
Say the Xbox360 has a key of "012345", so:
Original DVD Drives key: 012345 <----- They match, and the Xbox360 works.
New DVD Drives key: 456789 <---- They don't match, so the Xbox360 doesn't work.
New DVD Drive with original key: 012345 <---- It matches, Xbox360 boots with a different drive

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the replies, i really appreciate it, So if i was to just send in the 360 dvd drive, do i then just buy a 360, open it up and remove the dvd drive and then send it to a mod chip store that flashes the drives?
Or do i need to at least boot the 360 first with an original game?

I don't think it'll matter but I'd at least boot the Xbox360 first to make sure it works, doesn't have to be with a game. Then when you know it works, take out the DVD Drive and send it away.

Hey guys,
I heard that you can only flash an Xbox 360 if it was manufactured before July 2006, is this true? Is there going to be a work around?
So for an Xbox 360 manufactured after July 2006 is the only option to have a mod chip installed or is that not going to work either?

Apparently Microsoft will be blocking all Firmware Flashed Xbox360's from accessing Xbox Live in the near future..
