lads a fix for the dx problem with xp sp2 .
download dx9.0c from microsoft
yes i know it want install, but you can manually extract the files from the cab files dead easy and sort it your self.

1. Extract all files from both dxnt and bdaxp cabs into a temp folder
2. Copy everything bar the dlls and dxdiag to c:\windows\system32\directx\dinput
3. Create a temp folder in c:\windows\system32\ and move all the dlls and dxdiag into them from the folder you extracted dx into.
4. Reboot the pc hit f8 at post go into "safe mode with command prompt"
5. Use the "cd.."(3 times) to move down to the root of your drive when in command prompt.
6: then type cd windows ,then cd system32,cd temp
7. Now type "copy *.* c:\windows\system32"
8. Reboot go back into the where the dx cabs where, find the managedDX cab extract it and run the set up
9. you now have a Working correct version of dx9.0c and the sims 2 works( this has worked on all rc2/sp2 versions of xp with either beta or corrupt dx installs)

over done explanation but it works( and gave me another 10 fps in doom as well)

Here's how i got the sims to work:
- Mount it with Daemon Tools 3.46 with ALL OPTIONS ON
- After installing, close Daemon Tools but leave CD1 mounted AND leave the emulation options ON

Worx like a charm!

People having directX problems should try this prog. It's a remover. Use it, reboot then install directX from Sims cd 1.

copywrong mate the remover does not work for rc2 and beta versions of directx 9.0c versions below 9.0c it works, it will remove directx and put 8 back on you can update to 9.0a but the 9.0c installer still detects 9.0c as present because of the build version of your xp (it only affects sp2 and rc2 users).

I hate topics that end up discussing technical difficulties rather than the game itself - that's not an attack on those discussing problems, but wouldn't it be better suited to the technical support forum instead?

That's weird SAMUEL BECKETT because I had the same problem. Sims wouldn't start because it did not detect my BETA directX 9.0c. I took a chance and ran the remover and then it worked after installing directX from cd 1. So if you have problems, try it. Another guy here had the same problem and I told him about the prog and it worked for him aswell.

i couldnt agree more with you ispep.
this problem have been here ever since nforce was created.
i dont even know why the admins have a pc technical forum if they dont even care when people posts technical problems here.

just remove the pc technical forum and make a "sims2 help" or whatever thread here instead if people are too lazy to go to the pc technical section.
its extremely annoying to sit here and want to read what people have to say about the game since most posts are not even about the game.

Oops, there go the "I hate technical stuff in the game discussion area" posts, time to crack down.... Wink

Please keep technical problems in the PROPER PC TECHNICAL FORUM section or they'll just get deleted.

Why bother waiting until people complain?

The mods should make it a rule that there should be a thread in this forum for discussion about the game and a thread in the technical forum for technical probs for each release.

Would make the threads a lot easier to read from the beginning.

i can guess that a lot of sim boys will get caught at 2 am in the morning watching the ugh... education .avi files you put in the sims folder Shocked

ps.

is there a way of running this addictive piece of shit in a window?

yes look in the readme

WINDOWED MODE
-------------
To run The Sims 2 in windowed mode, first create a shortcut to the game by right-clicking on Sims2.exe and selecting "Create Shortcut." Then right-click the shortcut, and select properties. At the end of the "target" line, add a space and the text "-w" (without quotes). Click Ok, then launch the game by double-clicking on the shortcut. Running the game in a window will allow you to more easily switch between different programs, but please note that running other programs at the same time as The Sims 2 will be detrimental to the game's performance. Also note that edge scrolling does not function in windowed mode. If you experience any graphical anomalies, please make sure your desktop is set to 32-bit color.

Other command line options:

-w windowed mode
-f fullscreen mode
-nosound run with no sound
-r800x600 run at 800 x 600 resolution
-r(w)x(h) run at (w) x (h) resolution

Is there a way to switch from euro time format to US time format (military time to AM/PM). Sure I know how to read military time, but I'm more comfortable with US time Razz

Also, there seems to be a disapeering people bug again. When I get off my business chopper, it states I brought home a friend. However, I do not SEE them. I can see my spa in USE by them, and my conversation points go up when sitting in the spa, but I can neither see nor select this "invis sim". Anyone know if this is a permanent issue? Anyone else experience it?

PostPosted: Tue, 14th Sep 2004 06:47    Post subject: Here's what I did
Unfortuanately I was pissed after having deleted ANYTHING emulation related (I went to search and typed in clone, emulate, ccd) and still having it NOT work.

So...I created a new user (windows XP) and told it not to copy over the settings from my other account.....I mounted the CD with my other account then logged off....went to the new account (and there literally was no cd emulation software running or installed on it) and ran the game. WORKED LIKE A CHARM Smile

I hate having to do it.....but it works like a charm and rightly so....it's logical that it wouldn't detect any emulation software on the new user because none is installed...it's essentially a fresh start.

Anyhow...give it a shot if you're still having troubles...

Otherwise the game is GREAT Smile

I doubt it will be of much help but this is how I got the game running ...

Extracted the mdf and mds files for all 4 CDs into a folder and burned them to a DVD. Using Alcohol120, I then created 4 image drives and mounted all 4 mdf files from the DVD. I then installed the game from the first image drive and unmounted the last 3 image drives when it had finished installing since only the first CD needs to be mounted for playing the game (I think).

Also, I think you have to have Alcohol120 running since it wouldn't start until it was so I then minimized that and started the game!

Now I got the damn rotational mouse sluggishness problem ...
