I found out today that my comp is infected...Goldun trojan as I soon found out. I haven't used antivirus or firewall since I got x64 windows installed, but I scanned them now and then and I never had a problem. I have no idea how that thing got into my system but I was unable to remove it, I tried about 5 different antivirus programs and they all detected it but removal was unsucessful. I assumed it was protected by a rootkit, and it was, sadly there are no rootkit removers for 64bit windows.
SInce this is my second larger windows problem in 4 weeks I decided to take this as a sing from god and decided to format my HDD and install Vista. I quickly "backed up" all my data onto my E partition. (I have 3 partitions, C for windows, D for apps and games, and E for data, my documents and pretty much everything important to me). I never format my E partition...
So I started Vista installation, got to the choose install partition and found out that my C isn't large enough(10GB), and I need 14GB. So I decided to merge my C and D. I'm old fashioned and I use fdisk (extended fdisk actually). So I deleted C and D, and I was very very careful not to touch E. But for some reason my E drive stayed in the middle of two "Unallocated Space"-s... so I couldn't merge them, unless I deleted E aswell(I assume). I couldn't do that so I just decided to reverse the C and D, making D 10GB and C 50GB. I did it, but I made them NTFS, and I couldn't format that in DOS, and so on I changed the partitions and stuff. Finally when I tought I had it I started the vista isntallation again and it still didn't want to install...now I went back to xfdisk and changed the partitions again a bit(again I didn't even touch E). This time tho, I noticed that my E suddenly became D; I assumed it was trivial what letter it is, since the space remained the same. I upated the partiton table and started windows installation again.
And here's when the fun begins; vista still wouldn't install, but that wasn't the issue, the issue is that 130GB of my E drive is now being reported as UNALLOCATED SPACE. WTF!? Omg that drive has everything that is dear to me...savegames from about 20 games(5 of which I planned to finish during holidays, and I was really looking forward to them because I'm working hard to college and don't have time for games), I had my game engine(that I have been programming for years), my e-book, my mp3 collection. None of which I have backed up.
I tried moving the partitions back and forth, nothing worked, I swear I had tears in my eyes and I would have cried if my roomie wasn't here. I spent about 3 hours in absolute terror, at one point thinking this must be a fucking bad dream, it can't be true, my whole life is on that drive.
I used my laptop to search for different recovery utilited, none of which worked. I dabbled with xfdisk again and managed to make Active@ Partition Recovery utility work. OMG I cannot belive that thing worked so well, it detected my original partitions in few seconds(even though I reformatted and changed the table about a dozen times). I saw my old files I was so happy. But unfortunately it was just a demo version and I had real trouble finding a full version, I was prepared to buy the program but then I found it on a crack website. Anyways I have my drive back right now, I'm so happy.
No Vista yet tho...plus I forgot to send my resume for a project I hoped to worked on, and today was the deadline...that's what happens when I wait till last minute.
Sorry for the long read, I had to tell someone
Off to sleep now finally, cya

Glad it worked out in the end. All my good stuff I back up. I almost lost everything a couple of years ago but I recovered it.

Yeah, you don't actually realise how valuable the data you have on your computer is, until you almost lose it.

Yeh, I don't get why people get upset.
I lost 160gbs of fav movies/tunes/games and I just downloaded on album as soon as I fixed everything and it lasted with me for a while till I reclaimed my collection.
On my mac I backup everything. I have so much stuff on it, that took me ages to find.

Good to hear it worked out for ya.
I remerber i redid my comp, thought i had everything backed up.
I forgot to backup all my radient projects. All my Q3 mapping was gone, i thought.
Almost a year later i fire up my Ipaq, and low and behold, i backup up all my maps to my CF card. Even though my textures were lost, at least all my design work(My .map and .bsp files) was still there.
