Ok, the coffe was "too hot", but $589.000 for something she caused herself is just not right. Oh, and sorry. It was 600k "not" millions. My bad. Like it matters, still alot of money for something like that.

you miss the point that she only wanted 20K to cover medical expenses she paid out of pocket, but McDonalds refused to pay. They took a gamble that a lawyer couldn't make a case, and they lost. I bet it was actually quite easy to convince a jury by marching in the poor old burned woman, and playing on their sympathy.

I'd accept the responsibility myself, but shit, you can hardly blame her for trying. Perhaps she actually had no way to pay those bills, and thought this was her best chance to not burden her family with them when she died. who knows, I just don't think she's stupid to have tried.

If someone cuts themselves with a knife, does it give you a right to sue the maker of the knife?
If you burn yourself on a plate, should you sue the maker of the oven?
If you are electrocuted because the radio fell down into the bathroom, should you sue the maker of the bathtub or the radio?

I'm sorry, it's laughable and stupid how much shit people can sue for in the US.

Just because you can try to sue, doesn't mean you will win. They still actually have to make a case.

Did you see that link I posted, about how the # of lawsuits in the US is distorted in the media?

Here is another:
http://www.citizen.org/documents/BushDistortionFactSheet12-15-04.pdf

seems like this myth is pushed so that corporations/businesses can actually get out of paying compensation when they owe it.

Look. In the states it's their right to be happy. Srsly. If you make someone unhappy, they can sue you for making them unhappy. I'm not making this up.

You can shoot people for going on your property. You can enter any house as long as the front door is open. It's screwy.

This label biz is also fucked. It's for public safety tho. I'm sure that at a party a drunk girl may try to show off what she can do with a bottle, and if she starts choking and someone helps her and the bottle cracks her teeth, she can sue the bottling company. Heck, she can sue the guy who tried saving her life.

During a CPR course here, they told us that before we attempt to save someone’s life we have to ask if they need help if they’re choking. If they say no, don’t touch them. Just let them choke. If you perform CPR on someone who doesn’t want it, they can sue you. I don’t know if it’s like that in the states. Sad

I think it says on the knives, if you buy them, that they're not to be used in such a manner. So... you can't sue.

With the oven, yeah, if there's not warning and the wiring's fucked that you can't see if it's on or off and you burn your hand badly. You can sue. And you’ll win.

With the radio... i don't think you'll be able to sue anyone after that.

I used to work for a insurance company, long time ago. One case a 18 yr old broke into a gravel pit, cut locks and fences too. This is all on tape. He choses our insured pile of gravel to do dirt bike stunts off, falls and breaks his neck. Guy is now a quad.

(Canada not US)

One of the reasons for the large pay outs on some cases is because someone does have to pay for this kid for the rest of his life. The goverenment (welfare/disability) doesn't want the responsibility so they go for the owners who can pay. It is ususally broken down too. Our insured (because it was his pile of gravel) had to pay out the most. Then the gravel pit had to pay a % and the kid was found to be responsible for a small %.

The fact that, that old bitch even got the case to court says everything about the US legal system. Instead she should have gotten a sign to put around her neck that said "don't come near me, cause I'm a fucking danger to myself and society". And her lawyer should have been disbarred.

You know what I thinks sucks getting sued partly because you have money or insurance. Think about it. Are you going to try to sue a poor person? Can't get water outta a stone. You got money invested in a house, or business, there are always those that think they should have it, that they deserve it. They get wind of some sue/scam/sham and the gears in their heads start turning and the next thing you know you have a slip and fall on your hands and they have ideas of big bucks coming their way.

If the US had socialized medicine, none of this would have happened either Wink

Yeah, but that's just one of the many things wrong with the US. I'm glad I live in Europe after all Wink
