untill ATI releases their new card no. Nvidia for now I'm sure will be working on support for their 8800 on vista unless they got a project for another card to come out.

Well if i look at what happened last year.
GeForce 7950 Not a big leap between these really
GeForce 7900 -
GeForce 7800 GTX 512 MB (I got this one)
GeForce 7600

I am sure we will see a similar development this year.
Speculating of course
GeForce 8950 Maybe Aug- Oct 2007
GeForce 8900 Maybe May-June 2007
GeForce 8800 GTS/GTX 2006 Dec
GeForce 8600 Rumored Feb 2007

Why do you think its a waste of money? Its the most powerful 3D card available. And its MUCH more powerful than 7xxx and other old generation cards. Maybe there are no DX10 games yet, but there are games like Oblivion etc where you can definately use the power of 8800. And believe, now, when such a powerful cards exist, more and more games will have so high system requirements you will definately need 8800 (Nvidia will take care of it). That always happens when new hardware appears. And it will happen again and sooner than you expect. So its expensive, yes, but its worth it, if you are a real gamer Wink

Like I just posted. I bought the 7800GTX 512 mb in Dec or Jan 2005-06
And it was/is basically kick ass even compared to the 7950. But hey the 8800GTX is da boss ATM. I guess I get a new one around Dec this year again, a 9800 GTX no doubt Razz
KrutojPoc wrote:

Amen to that.
Just played some COH (example) I run all on HIGH! with the 8800GTX its like butter believe me. Compared to the 7800GTX all high etc, which is OK but stutters when you look over the landscape, its a CLEAR! difference in performance. Same goes for R6 Vegas, tried that with both cards and you can't believe the diff. Its just like "cool game, all max and play" no fiddling with settings and crap. Its just "The Way It's Meant to Be Played" Razz

Thats if you play 1024x768 or something. If you use very high resolutions + AA + AF + HDR...in that case the difference between GTX and GTS is al least 20fps in most tests, which i think is too much. So...only GTX for me Smile

Just installed the EVGA 8800GTX w/ACS3 Cooling System. Damn them high-end cards are huge! Its a frick'n brick! Shocked Shocked Still.. my system is now more stable than with my older XFX 7600gt XXX edition card (man that thing was terrible). Nevertheless, other than 3dmark2006, is there another good benchmarking app I could use to test this beast? Had 11,121 benchmark score in all the tests in 3dmark2006 (ran @ 1280x1024 with forced max AA and AF on) but need more universal testing to commence. Nvidia certainly has a winner here folks! DAMN!! Very Happy

I've no idea what you're talking about. Must have been your card, maybe it was broken. I have the same card and it's great. I never had the slightest problem in the last half year. It was the best 7600 gt you could buy (better performance than normal 7600 gt cards for a comparable price).

Yeah, one more inch and I would have had to take the HDD cage... But it just fits now, and it runs AMAZINGLY! ON EVERY GAME! To the ones considering, get the GTS, it's is indeed a great value. For the more convinced, get the GTX, it's one hell of a beast!

Tried those but they don't do much - they're just for show and they run too well @ max settings. Very Happy I need a good benchmarking app besides 3dmark2006 which is a community standard to compare against.

No idea d00d.. I could run Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, for example, with Max Shadows enabled - it would crash my computer after 30seconds. It started artifacting on the ground in the game. Wierd. On my new EVGA 8800GTX ACS3 beastie it treats it as a frick'n insult. Very Happy

Yep.. the 8800GTX is perhaps one of Nvidia's finest GPUs since the first Geforce. The difference in speed from its predecessors is staggering. I say: BRING ON THE R600 ! !

8800GTX is capable of processing 86.4GB/s
rumors are that the XTX version of the R600 will process about 153.6GB/s
- 512 bit bus
- 1GB GDDR4 (1.2GHz physical, 2.4GHz DDR)

bring on the r600...

I'll probably be building myself a new rig around march time. Hopefully, The R600 will be out by then forcing the 8800 to come down a few £££'s. Very Happy

The R600 will probably be more powerful than the 8800 but then your always gonna have to pay that "premium" price tag for that privelige too. I'd say that I was a pretty hardcore gamer but £1000+ on a gaming pc is starting to take the piss. Shocked

Well I've kinda got the same problem as you.......I'm still relying on agp cards and they just aint gonna cut it no more in the coming months. Same as my cpu......it's just a bog standard P4 3ghz.

I cant upgrade my board anymore so I'm gonna have to ditch the whole lot and start from scratch. About the only thing worth keeping from my current rig is my HDD and thats only cuz it SATA! Very Happy

personal opinion here but the 8800GTS from evgaisnt too much more expensive than some of the x1950's and the 8800 will last quite some time.. but if your on the ati wagon you might as well get the x1950xt or pro

1950XT's can be had for $200 flat, a lot of them are going for $225'ish compared to $399 thats a big price difference. They are known as the best price/performance ratio card right now especially since it beats the 7900GS/GT in the majority of games. My friend just bought one and although its 256Mb from a gameplay point of view the performance is almost identical to my 512 version

Wait until the 320MB version of the 8800GTS drops, they will be around $299. Everyone is gonna be jumping on those.

DirectX 10 always seemed to me to be really overhyped to get everyone to switch to Vista, as I know for me if I could have DirectX10 on Windows XP I'd probably not upgrade. Although DirectX10 does have improvements over 9, but still nothing that would drag me from XP to Vista if I really could stick with XP.

Yep I would never upgrade to Vista if MS wouldn't force us with DX10. I don't want to leave my nicely configured, clean Windows XP installation behind. I'm happy with XP. But now everyone interested in games will have to get Vista at some point. I think that sucks! They released DirectX 8 for Windows 95, DirectX 9 for 98 - I'm sure they could also release DX10 for XP.

I have owned both. I had X1900 crossfire when they were fastest(arguably) but this 8800gtx is way faster. I will always go for fastest card and I always buy OEM(I have contacts) and less than going rate so why would I wait around? If R600 is faster than 8800gtx then that will be my next card and so on.

but for now 8800gtx is fastest and is a great card. it also overclocks pretty well and im in the process of voltmodding it to push it further. Very Happy

and @Deelix, what you say is correct but its not so for us that like everything there is maxed, and 1900x1200+
