Well i think for me its more about Sony. I have many Sony products, my PSP,TV and i used to have both PS1 and PS2.
When Sony first show those First trailers i was so blown away, and ill admit, i fell for the hype. I looked at the 360 when it came out, and seriously thought MS must be smoking glue. Sony is going to spank them silly.
To my dismay and many other Sony fans, it was all smoke and mirrors and nothing but lies. Up until launch i was still planning on buying one in the first 2-3 months after launch.
But after the numbers game they played, 2 Tflops my ass, and the piss pour quality of the games (360 version being much better, even fightnight3). Then Blueray being subpar compared to HD-DVD (I was waiting for it to get better). And the noscailer fuckup (Doesnt effect me though).
Then we have Sony in a recent press release still saying the PS3 is way more powerful than the 360, its futureproof etc. More BS and lies. The PS3 cant even handle running Motorstorm split screen (Said by the developer)
Fuck you Sony. Your TVs still rule, but thats about it. The Only thing that saved my PSP, was DarkAlex.

Sony's arrogance seems to have caught up with them. Selling a system on promises just inst going to work. With 60% of Sony's operating profits coming from the playstation brand , a dramatic loss in marketshare will be devastating.
Im optimistic that by xmas 2007 the PS3 will have some must have titles to spur sales. But the days of market share numbers like of what sony have enjoyed in the past may be over.

The roles have changed from the last generation. Then, the PS2 had slightly worse hardware, but it compensated in earlier release date, lower prices and most importantly, better games than Xbox.
Now, the X360 has the upper hand by being cheap, earlier release and guess what? It's got the best games!

I am very happy for the WII, I always loved my 360 ... and Sony really screwed them selves up baaad ... here in los angeles, all stores have piles of PS3s no one is buying ...

Nah Towlie. It's the vast lateness of the ps3 which has screwed ut's self over. Most parents will get their kids either one system or another. They've lost out on a huge piece of the market because the 360 is already in a lot of homes now. The 360 is what they're geting to be spending their cash on for games and addons.

It's a good job you got rid of it when you did, it would just keep losing value if you kept it. Even better that you sold it before it comes out in europe, that way you actually made a profit! 
It's unlikely to catch up with the 360 now, just like the original Xbox it'll always be behind, even if some good games come out for it. With the Wii snapping up the part of the market looking for something different it's going to have a even harder time.

Similar to my poll's choice, I really do think that at this point it's hard to tell which kind of a future awaits the ps3, however, being an expensive device, with no true justification for it, problems can arise.
If Sony reduce costs, and 2007 will have quality exclusive titles under its belt, well than, there's a chance.
Now one last thing,
I own an xbox360, however, I won't bash the PS3. I truly believe that competition is healthy, and the biggest winners are us, the gamers.

My friend got one and spent a weekend playing with it...wasnt impress at all, only one good game exclusive to the PS3 (Resistance). There will be more good games but the damage is already done.
No to mention the war between HDDVD vs Bluray and as far as i can see, Bluray is on a complete downfall. We'll see in the next year or so how Sony will do with all of this. Overall, the PS3 is totally not on my "got to buy" list

Good comments people!
I think the conclusion is that we have no idea whats going to happen. The opinions on the net are split - just look at the poll results so far...
I myself am amoung the negatives. I think the X360 is a better investment. All the hype and bad PR from Sony has gone too far - reality is now smacking them in the face - but they keep denying and keep hyping.
Luckely, consumers ain't THAT stupid. They know whats going on now. Sony is only loseing face.
Will we see a new Playstation mania with the PS3? ....no

yep, that and replaced Blu-Ray with a DVD-ROM. In fact they should have done everything the same way as microsoft. With the exception of a "optional" Harddrive, that was the one good decision Sony did.

Problems with PS3
1.) Price.
2.) Features you don't need.
3.) Lack of games for now, losing more and more exclusives for later.
4.) Purchasing one shows support of a company which pretty much shits on it's customers, expecting them to gobble it up. I'm glad Sony fucked this up. They need to learn a lesson in humility, and some of the talking heads their need to roll. I could list perhaps 100 problems, but I'm sure you all remember... Motorstorm being 1080P (direct LIE). Major scaling issues unfixable through firmware updates. Perfect PS/PS2 emulation... And by perfect I mean ugly as all fucking hell. Insert 1/100 other Sony "screw the customer" moments.
In the end, their single biggest fuckup this generation was pushing brand new and unknown technology. Blu-Ray not only pushed up the price $100-150, it delayed the release and made it very small. Can any of you imagine how amazing Sony would have done if they had just USED DVD? According to them (Personally, I would say they lied, and the Cell and lack of games was the reason for pushing it back), the Blu-Ray is what help them back. If so... They could have released what, around when the 360 was released?
Now we're starting to hear more and more complaints about the asynchronous processer architecture, something that will NEVER change, and you realize Sony has a huge, huge problem on their hands.
Do I think they will completely fail? No. There are idiots out there. They will purchase the vast majority of PS3's. There are videophile early adopters. They will pick it up for a Blu-Ray player, and make up a smaller portion, as cheap Blu-Ray sets that can be controller with a real remote and with better performance/scaling/features are released in the coming months/years. Lastly, you will have a number of people who love the (few) exclusives Sony has.
Keep in mind that of these people, you need to eliminate those looking for a bargain, most of those who already have 360's (so much cross platform, no reason for both unless rich), and those who can't justify $600 for a system.
It simply can't do well.
PS: Don't tell me it will take off in the future. The 360 user base isn't going to fking vanish. The avalanche of Wii converts will not stop enjoying their systems. Most importantly: The price of the PS3 will NOT drop down to the beloved $200 price point for YEARS. I would say if they get lucky, and continue taking a loss, they might drop it 50-100$ in THREE years. maybe more. With the amount of hardware in there, it's not like they'll ever get manufacturing cheap enough to drop it to the price a console SHOULD be.
Anyhow. Wheee. Sony sucks.

I agree with you 100 %.
Just a comment to the POLL so far:
I remember just after E3 2006, I had a similar POLL. Despite the poor Sony showing, over 60% of the votes was in favor of Sony. oh - how things change.
I could understand from the start that the PS2 would be a success. I have no understanding for the PS3 to be a similar success. none. They have ONLY brand loyalty going for them now.
Hype = lies. Lies = dissapointment. Dissapointment = anger. Anger = negative press.

Sony have EVERYTHING on the line in terms of their PS3, and at the moment I don't think it's that much of a big deal to the public. It's a year later than the 360, and the quality of its 1st gen games left alot to be desired. I know its not all down to graphics, and the game developers are truely to blame, but i think Sony have shot themselves in the foot with this one - and it's going to be alot closer a war than people originally expected.

Bang on the money.
Think it will come down to how patriotic/snobby the Japanese majors decide to be with there big name releases. When the console war was just rhetoric it was easy for the likes of Sega and Square to commit to Sony. Now they stand to lose a lot of money, in the short term at least, by sticking with the Playstation.
