After the hype caused by the gtx and gts 640 mb, I was surprised to see this litteraly halved version of the gts 640. As I'm still in process of buying the best bang of bucks high level pc, this card I think does the job well according to reviewers. Note that I almost fell out for the gtx. I just didnt take in account the cost of a new screen.
Clearly the performance is same as 640mb version, just the memory bandwith is halved.
From what I read many cards are sold slightly more OCed than the nvidia 320 reference model. AND it can still overclocked to levels that get close to the stock gtx.
In most games the 320 mb is enough. problems arise when at higher resolutions (>1600)you try to crank up the AA.
There's a criteria mentioned that is often overlooked: the screen size. a 19'-20' screen benefits fully of this version, where 640mb and gtx require 22' and 24' or more screens to unleash their powers.
Added the fact that is the cheapest best card on the market, and that other dx10 cards will come out later, I think for me it's the best buy.

@ the R6 Vegas performance in AnandTech...
But it's a good starting point for people who want affordable card that is really good. GTX still pwns it, but it's still much better than the rest.

Also take in account that this card is way shorter than the gtx version, allowing it to be installed into most cases.

The 320MB version isn't too impressive.

It's impressive for the target audience. Only the XTX surpasses it performance-wise, but it has 512MB and is closer in price to the 640MB version of 8800 GTS.

xtx has many disavantages:
- price, as its till the top of the line of ATI
- power consumption that is equivalent to gtx
- noise, its the worst high end card in that matter (not mentioning 2x of them)
the 320 mb in many games surpass the the xtx in pure performance.
The line between them get blurred when you're playing a game that use lots of GPU ram and at a high resolution with 4AA+
If we take all account all the parameters its best buy for me.
let's say a top card for directx9 and entry line for dx10.
Seeing that I dont plan installing vista this year, and that others high end dx10 cards will appear, this card is worthy for a year or 2. That life span justifies the low price tag.
However, there 2 things that makes me want to wait more,
- that ATI new card (not that I'll buy it, it's planned to be overpriced)
- and the new lines of G80 based geforces that will come very soon
Those two events combined should drop the prices and I'm sure offer new oppurtunities to get the best quality/price card.
in a nutshell if nvidia gets out a g80 with 512mb ram and low price, I definitely buy. Until then this 320mb is damn tempting.
