@ KrutojPoc
Let's see....non-linear games since deus ex?
Kotor
Kotor 2
NWN (plus all the mods)
NWN 2 (plus all the future mods)
Gothic series
Arcanum
Baldur's gate 2(yes it came AFTER deus ex or pretty much the same time)
Gene troopers
The list does go on,but I can't be bothered to list all games that are non-linear(that is debatable) and has a good/decent story.
Not all linear games have good story...not by a long shot.
AMD Ryzen 9 7900X 4,7 GHz
Asrock X670E Steel Legend
G.Skill Trident Z5 32 GB DDR5 6400Mhz
Asus TUF RTX 4090 24 GB GDDR6X
NZXT Kraken Z73 RGB
Corsair HX1500i Platinum
NZXT H7 Flow

it's zombies!
fuck story!
and how many linear games, apart from halflife, actually even try to tell a story?
really not that many
there is a mod for flashpoint that places you basically in a '28 days later' kind of universe, with no real instruction other than survive and escape the zombie infested island
you scour around the island for vehicles and fuel, guns and ammo, survivors and information
it's immersive and YOU write the story, far more gripping than, say, halflife
it's not that hard
it's just not marketable to say "well, you can do whatever you like"

you are clinging on those two...what about the rest.
Can you just face the fact that there ARE NON-LINEAR FPS games other than deus ex in the past 7 years.
And yes oni was 3rd person,I can't remember everything...
AMD Ryzen 9 7900X 4,7 GHz
Asrock X670E Steel Legend
G.Skill Trident Z5 32 GB DDR5 6400Mhz

You never played Deus Ex did you? |
Then there are all those non-linear RPG's out there with great stories. Planescape Torment comes to mind.
Deus Ex was such an amazing experience. Great gameplay, huge choice in how you develop your character, a complex and engaging story, great characters, fantastic dialogue and setpieces and so much freedom. Why can't they make games like that today!? |
seems the companies back then that rocked with games (ion storm and black isle to name a couple) went under and were fed with more BS companies that wont go under like fuckin atari (infrogames)

Thief 3 : DS is non-linear (well, not as linear as most games), can be played in first person and did have quite a good story, but maybe that's just my opinion.
