Maybe it's Windows 98? Try putting Windows 2000 or something.

WTF?! Put Windows 2000 in there at once! Once I put XP on my P3 500/64MB, I never looked back.

On such crap hardware, 2000 > XP because it has less processes. If he want XP to run smooth on that, he'll have to tweak it to a level that is the same as 2000.

That's probably best, if he can find it. Judging from his question about the torrent client, he doesn't look the type to search that well.

Your hardware is fine and should be able to handle the load. I still use a p3 500mhz laptop sometimes and that sucker has seen much heavier action - downloading, encoding, surfing and winamp simultaneous. And I was using a combination of BitComet and Newsleecher. Only at really high d/l speeds the hard-disk used to have problems keeping up but no lag.

Your problem might lay somewhere else. Sometimes people using torrent clients tend to increase max connections and that causes internet surfing to lag but not the whole computer.

People tend to overestimate their hardware needs and always end up buying the 'super-duper fast' computer which they don't need.
