yeah i think ill probably get a single 8800gtx card.

ive been running a 1.7ghz machine for 6 years, and i have a second 3.06ghz machine thats running an agp 4x ati x850 thats just not cutting it (hasnt for a few years now)

ive got a good back catalogue of recent games that id really like to *finally* enjoy + get back into some online css action, plus id like to be able to run a few of the immediate upcoming games at great quality with excellent speed + run 3dmax 9 smoothly. ill keep the new pc on xp most likely and look at upgrading to vista when crysis shows up... i think this is the best plan to have to be honest. it'll keep the heat down inside my new rig, and also power consumption down a bit too Wink

thanx for your help.

two last questions - re 8800gtx cards... i know dx10 is (atleast currently) vista only, so this card will mostly benefit from vista... but what about hddvd and bluray compatability... will these only function on vista or aside from dx10 is there no other reliance on vista for the 8800 cards?

also whats a 'smart' choice for power supply... 1000w is pretty overkill it seems - would 750w be a good choice, or higher? as i said, quad core cpu + 4 hd's, an 8800gtx (and beyond for future upcoming cards), plus whatever else i shove in there (dvd/hd drives, sound card, tv card etc...)

You will LOVE the 8800 series in terms of going back and enjoying games. That's what I first did and still am doing. It is great running games at high res + maxed out like you were only able to do with a thousand-dollar video card setup, just awhile ago. Like oblivion for instance, 16x10 rez with everything maxed and the ultimate texture mod runs silky smooth. Ditto for everything else.

Upgrading to Vista is beneficial in having dx10 only, as far as I know xp should be able to play bluray or hddvd just fine.

As far as power supply, I would recommend only what you need, for now and near future. Yes 1kw is overkill and you will prolly see it reflected in your powerbill(especially if you run 24x7, like I do). Without plans to run dual video card, 750w is max I would go, and maybe 600w minimum. The key thing you want is a power supply from a good reliable company(OCZ, antec, ect) and lots of juice on the +12v rail(s). You should get one with At least 30 amps on 12+ rail, and dual(or quad) 12+ rails is best.

Edit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104015 This baby has got 60 amps on quad 12v rails and over 85% efficiency. I would buy it if I was needing more power, but mine is working just fine. Choose one you like tho.

Core i7 920 @ 3.8Ghz | 6GB OCZ DDR3 8-8-8-24 @ 1600mhz | eVga x58 Mobo | 2 x eVga GTX 460 SLI | Intel X25-M + 3x Seagate + WD Black = 2.75TB | X-Fi Titanium | PCP&C Silencer 750 | G15 KB | G5 Mouse | G35 Headset | Z-5500 Digital | Samsung T260HD

Thanks to my incredible haggling abilities I managed to get a brand new sealed 8800GTX off craigslist for $460 flat.

I'm gonna install some games and see what this thing can do! Very Happy Very Happy

I have to say this card is pretty damn powerful, it's ran everything I've thrown at it smooth as butter.

I've got about 5-6 more games I wanna test, one of the main ones being TDU since it ran like ass on my old X1900XT.
