I'm trying to do a fresh windows xp installing on my pc with a new hard drive:
Western Digital WD2500KS SATA-II.
(This is the only hard drive in my system)

In the setup process when it comes to the partitioning part, I have created two partitions,
then the setup asks me to format the drive using the NTFS file system, I choose that option but the format progress bar just hangs on 0%.

A few notes:
1. The hard drive is shown in the BIOS and also in the xp setup so I don't believe its SATA drivers.
2. I tried more than 1 xp installation cd (with sp2) and more than 1 optical drive.
3. I did a memory test with GoldMemory which went out just fine.
4. I tried to connect the drive to the other SATA connectors in my board and also tried with another SATA cable (new one)

System:
P4 2.4GHz
Intel Desktop Board D865PERL
1GB DDR400 Kingston ValueRAM
Western Digital W2500KS

This is also my first try of working with SATA drives so I might be missing something.

Thanks in advance, any help will be appreciated.

You can try partitioning before you boot from the windows cd. Maybe by booting from a diskette and using fdisk or a similar dos tool (I forget the name), maybe booting from a linux livecd and partitioning with that. Or you could connect your hd to another pc and partitioning and formatting there ...

How large is that XP partition? Try to create a few Gb partition for starters. 6Gb should do fine. After a succesful install you can always increase that size.

If you conclude it is some kind of incompatibility, you should check the intel site for a bios update.

OK, First my C partition was 100GB and here is what I did:

I booted my system with Slackware 10.2 CD (the only linux I've got).
In the kernel boot option I wrote "sata.i" to load a kernel with sata support, and the hard drive identified just fine as /dev/sda1.
Then I started "cfdisk" and created only 1 partition with 6GB - "W95 FAT32 (LBA)" type, the rest of the hard drive was left unpartitioned.

Then I booted the Win XP CD again and when it came to the partitioning part it hanged again but this time on 1%. (I selected the "Format NTFS" option)

I really don't know what else can I try.

P.S - VGAdeadcafe, my bios already have the latest update.

Try formatting in FAT32 filesystem. If it works, you can use Partition Magic to convert it to NTFS later. Or you can try the "formatting on another PC approach", if possible.Or booting from a dos diskette for formatting the partitions might help.

Is this a custom built computer or dell or anything? I know if you try using your own installation on Dells, HP's and a few others their a bitch and a half to get an operating system other than the one they provide installed.

SpykeZ, this is a custom built pc.

VGAdeadcafe, I'm now trying to format from a win98 boot disk and will update.

Thanks for all the help!

Another Update:

I've tried to format C: drive from the win98 boot disk, than it starts formatting and after a few seconds it gives me the message:
"Trying to recover allocation unit" and there are running numbers in the side, sectors or something, I'm not really sure.

For how long did you wait when that happened? Was it reading/accessing the drive?

Sounds like you have a bad hard drive. I think that message means its trying to fix bad sectors (or more like excluding them from the usable part).

Is it a new drive? Can you get it replaced?

Also, if you cant replace it, try downloading a western digital hard drive utility (life guard or something), its supposed to scan the drive for errors and fix some of them.

1. I've waited for about 2 hours. Nothing happened.

2. It's a new hard drive. I can get it replaced but I don't think that the disk is damaged because I already replaced it before because of that reason. I don't think both of the hard drives I've got are bad.

All I can think of is that there might be something wrong with your motherboard then, I thnk it would be useful if you could try that drive in another computer (and format it there) to see if it works.
