I'm surprised by how poorly this game runs. At 1680x1050 with everything on full I was getting about 20 - 25 FPS on the very first area that you start off in when you speak to wolf. I turned off the grass shadows which suck anyway and now get 25 - 50FPS. Mostly at the bottom end of that scale though. My specs are

AMD 64 5400+ X2
2 x 1GB Kingston DDR2 667
MSI 8800 GTS 640MB

I would think that I could run it better than what I can. It's still playable though but it's not exactly great. I might add though that I think that this game looks pretty good. The trees and foliage are really nice.

That was my first impression as well.Basically this game is like the FPS version of Oblivion with less RPG elements.I have played for about 45 min and i cannnot say that i'm impressed so far.I don't know where the comparaisons with Deus Ex came from but they don't really have anything in common other than both having some sort of RPGish aspects.

Wierd...I got a similar system, a bit better, but not much, and it runs fine, except for major lag when loading the area. HD is obviously the bottleneck here. Might be a problem with loading, try defragging.

@Parallax - don't be a child. If you don't agree with me I really don't care. I know the best, and I'm sure you think you know the best, and it's same with anyone else

EDIT: @S.S.S
I actually tought Deus Ex at one point when I played it, but again, this game would be so much more fun with some skills to upgrade.

I'm average between 20-30 FPS @ 1440 x 900 with everything set to medium and both AA & AF enabled (first level on the bar).I tried to play at high settings but i was getting like 2 FPS Razz

I'm surprised that your rig don't run it better at that resolution.

The game was supposed to ship in two versions, though. Like two graphically different levels - one that could run on lower-spec computers. They explained that they could do that because of the extra long development time. Have you seen an option anywhere like that?

After seeing people with 8800's having performance problems, I was thinking this would barely run on my paltry A64 3000, 1gb ram, 7900GS - but I can run it with everything on max except lighting at 1440x900 and I get 40-60 FPS Shocked

Game looks nice, but alot of the textures don't hold up to close scrutiny, not complaining though as the gameplay has intrigued me alot and look forward to a proper session on it Very Happy

I played for about an hour and a half, and for now I have to say: nothing special. I knew the hype was too much so I prepared myself for the worse...

It's just an open-ended FPS game...I'm still in the starter zone and there were three "real" quests in total. All other quests are randomly generated, and you can typicaly choose from "Clear camp", "Kill stalker", "Bring artifact", "Bring item". Killing wildlife is absolutely useless ,as I found for now, they drop nothing, except perhaps 1 or 2 of those random quest items (which I doubt anyone will play), and they're just a waste of bullets.

I like that you have to learn by your mistakes, for example it's hard to tell who you can, and who you can't kill, unless you tried it before. For example, army is blocking the entrance out of the begginer zone and they have much better weapons than you, plus there is no place to hide = you're dead.

Anomalies are everywhere, you gotta be really careful where you step. Like 3 of them on screen at any given time.

Artifacts are wierd, and they stupid bonuses like +2% radiation resistance, or 4% physical resistance. You can put them on your belt, but only for a short while, because they radiate you, and you lose health. You can have 4-5 on the belt at a time.

There is obviously good AI at work here (or at least a good idea behind it, can't really tell if it has been implemented well), wildlife fights eachother, you do missions with other stalkers, and they behave fine. But it feels too much like overhyped Radiant AI from Oblivion. Sure, NPC's are smart, and know how to hunt and eat and crap, but who the hell notices when someone goes to take a crap or go eat, they could have just made them wander aimlessly around the town and I don't think I'd knew the difference. Same thing with STALKER (possibly, as I really need to play more). Personaly I think making an advanced AI is the easy way out, because you can't make it as advanced as people would like it (human-like), but instead you could script each character and certain events, which adds much more human touch, and definately adds to realism.

It is certainly a little buggy, I noticed about 5 very small bugs, mostly graphical for now.

Basically, I see no point in exploring stuff around the main quest...Artifacts are pretty crappy (for now), you get new weapons during main quest missions, and money for other shit too. And what else is there to do? Progress main story, kill stuff, gather artifacts and weapons. That's it... Now... Only progressing the main story and killing stuff would be okay for a linear FPS, because you can do it much better in a linear game, and here...it's just silly.

So, this game is like Oblivion when you take away the skills and stats, experience and levels. Imagine playing oblivion without those, is there a point? I don't see one, and I ask myself why should I ever stray from the main quest, which brings the point, why make it open ended at all?

Game looks nicely modeled, zones are large with a few interest points in each, all in all pretty well done. Character/beast/weapon models could have been done much better, especially the llow-res texture on the weapon models.

I didn't proof read this so don't flame for spelling/grammar/logical mistakes plz, and also realize I only played for hour and half, basically just the starting zone so ALL of this might change later.

humm...
is it just me or this game sounds and looks just like Riddick?!

It is just you. Did you actually play the game or you are just basing it on the dude's review? Riddick had a lot of stealth missions, in STALKER even though if you run-and-gun you will die, you dont have to sneak around. And it certanly doesnt look like riddick.

When I got the public beta, the performance was crap next to the old leaked alpha.

I found the difference was the dynamic lighting. Turning that off fps went from ~40 to ~150, same as the old alpha. It still looked pretty good.

If you want to get some performance, turn off the dynamic lighting. Should still look decent (same textures and whatnot, just less moving shadows).

The lighting engine is quite a thing though, with it on it can have hundreds of lights. It's no wonder current PCs have a bit of a problem with it.

Wow i agree

I changed the DL option to "Static Lighting Only" after reading your post and my FPS skyrocketed into the 50-60.I can even put everything to max now with almost no FPS loss.It makes a VERY big difference.

The game doesn't look as good but i don't really care since the gameplay is now very smooth Very Happy

It has more in common with Oblivion than those two games imho.If your dream was to play oblivion with a gun then you should give it a try Razz

the game is most certainly not as bad as some here are saying... It's actually quit impressive, gfx look fine, gameplay is good and the environment setting rules!
Strange there are so many performance issues with poeple who run this game on high spec hardware. I run it on my shuttle with AMD athlon64 3500+ and a geforce 6800GE without any problems in 1280 *1024 medium quality (high is possible but give some stuttering sometimes)

I think it'd be fair to say the graphics are around HL2 standard, so nothing next-gen here but that's no reason to condemn it, unless you're a graphics whore or a hardware enthusiast that plays PC games purely to benchmark his system rather than attempt to enjoy the game itself.

I haven't gotten far enough to truly judge the gameplay, but I've done a couple of "missions" and am finding it pretty immersive and enjoyable. Being a big FPS fan aswell as an RPG fan it's really my cup of tea, although it doesn't lean towards the RPG side as much as say Deus Ex (At least from the little I've seen) - it is an effective blend however.

This is coming from someone that's followed this game from a far and not obsessed over it for 6 years, keep in mind Very Happy

P.S. As a couple of people mentioned, lighting is the killer with this one. Everything else runs at max just fine here but if I put the dynamic lighting on it's a slideshow - shame as it really adds the atmosphere! Time for an upgrade I think Smile
