Ok, so I'm planning a machine for the girlfriend so that when she starts her new graphic design course she can be ready to work from home.. Obviously there are certain requirements of a machine which will mainly be used for Illustrator / Photoshop work, some flash and possibly some movie work. The machine does NOT need to play the new top end games, so no directx10 card is needed (waste of money right now anyway Razz) and there is no need for a huge HDD as she can use my server space. We don't want to go utterly nuts money wise, we're both going to be living off my pittiful wage soon so the more money we save the better, but the budget does go upto £1000 if needed. This is the current build (which is based soley on cost pretty much..)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300, Socket 775, 1.86 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, Allendale Core, 2MB Cache, Retail - £109.78
MoBo: Abit AB9 i965, S775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 533/667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX - £71.43
RAM : 2GB (2x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240
PSU: 520W Corsair HX Series Modular PSU, ATX, EPS12V, (On a bundle deal with RAM) - £179.76
DVD: Pioneer DVR-112DBK 18x DVD±RW IDE (PATA) Black OEM - £20.55
HSF: Zalman CNPS9500-AT Intel LGA775 Aero Flower Cooler - £32.30
Case: Coolermaster Centurion RC-534 Black Tower Case w/o PSU - £38.18
GFX: 256MbXFX 7800GT,Mem Clock 1050 MHz,GPU 450 MHz,24 Pipes, Dual DVI-VIVO - £104.58
HDD: 250Gb Western Digital WD2500AAKS, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 9 ms - £48.75
Monitor: 20.1" Dell E207WFP, Widescreen LCD, 1680x1050, 5 ms, 800:1, 300 cd/m2, Black - £220.89

TOTAL: £847.05 (with various bundle deals for this week only)

So the question is, what should be changed? I'm not 100% happy with the mobo, as I hate ABIT, we need something with DDR800 support though as fast ram is essential! Also, what about the CPU? Overclocking?

Will this machine be good enough for graphic design?

Sounds about right, just a few suggestions: Get atleast 600W PSU, just to make sure everything runs fine and has the potential to upgrade. Other than that, you could get one of those 8600 that are comming soon, so you (and her Very Happy) could enjoy both worlds (performance and lower price). About the mobo... Well, not a big fan of Intel chipset. I'd go with a 650i.

I don´t want to state the obvious here, but..

Working with graphics, both at work and my free time, all i can say is you want ALOT of RAM.
2 GB´s is probably enough, but if you can get 3 or 4, consider it Wink

Watercooled 5950X | AORUS Master X570 | Asus RTX 3090 TUF Gaming OC | 64Gb RAM | 1Tb 970 Evo Plus + 2Tb 660p | etc etc

Is there any news on when the 8600's are hitting the shelves and what the specs will be? The PC wont be for my use as I'll be getting my own once I start working again, so it seems pointless getting a 8600 if it wont be needed. Still, it is still something to consider!

I was never a huge fan of nVidia's chipsets, I guess that's due to my own allegiances towards Intel. Why is it better? Or maybe a better question would be, why do you think its better Wink? lol

haha, indeed. We stuck it at 2GB/800 for now due to cost, the motherboard should leave room for upgrading. The biggest issue right now is that I don't *really* want to install XP 64 just for the 4Gb+ memory support (don't mention Vista, there is no chance in hell that thing is touching a PC in my house Razz).. So, 2Gb dual channel, or 3Gb?

Well, that depends, really.. At work, i have 2 gb, wich isn´t really enough for 3ds max 9 + PS CS2 and some other proggies (like Radmin, MSN, itunes, firefox, acrobat reader and so on).

At home i only have 1 gb, and sometimes I use PS CS2, Illustrator CS2, FF, Foobar and some other stuff at the same time. I even had InDesign CS2 on top of that on occasions.

What i mean is, in both these situations id go for the 3 gb´s, and she may face them sooner or later (maybe not 3ds max? Razz)

Probably not 3Dmax, but you never know :\!

She has been using my machine for a while now with Photoshop CS2 / Illustrator CS2 and a couple of other apps in the background and it coped. It wasn't massively fast, but it got the job done without being annoyingly slow. This machine has 2gb of DDR1.

We'll see how much it adds to the cost and put it on the "to think about list".. Anyone have any opinions about the CPU/Mobo?

OK, about release date, the latest reports say mid-April.

Now, I've seen some benchmarks of renreding of the 8800s, and the results were amazing. Now, sure, 8600 isn't a 8800, but it should still be 8600 > 7800. One feature to really contribute to this is unified shader architecture.

If u want it cheap - get a cheap mobo and cheap ram. and why buy such an expensive vc?

Memory speed isn`t important - the amount is... I`d say better get 4 gigs but save your money on motherboard and videocard.

The monitor is important :

"VA panels: launched by Fujitsu and available under the MVA denomination for AU Optronics, Sharp and CMO, PVA for Samsung, VA monitors have considerably improved LCD color quality. Until last March, however, these monitors were so slow that it was impossible to imagine them in a "gamer’s" home. Then, in April, came the release of AU Optronics the Premium MVA 8 ms in the VP191b…"

A quick google search brought no result - I don`t know which panel type is build into your chosen monitor.

Just my 2 cents...

I was considering an overclock, which was the reason for the RAM, more to the point, it was going cheap as part of a bundle deal Wink!
