don't wanna mess up this thread with offtopic posting but NAV is shitty compared to a lot of other antivirus apps.
it's an enormous resource hog, the scan engine isn't even that amazing either. (single scan engine, compared to some other apps who use dual engines these days)
NAV is made for people new to the whole antivirus thing, veteran computer users should look elsewhere.
just my 2c

personally i use something called antiviruskit 2004..
its got a goodlooking & simple GUI, dual scan engine & it only takes up 3-4 processes at around ~32MB resource usage.

the bigger, known antivirusproducts are built to provide userfriendlyness at the cost of memory usage. having a good name doesn't always mean it's an amazing product. norton/panda/f-secure are all pretty good (and if you have enough ram i wouldn't really bother changing either) but are all pretty big resource hogs.
if you do care about memory/system usage you might wanna check out kapersky (ugly GUI tho) or antiviruskit 2004.

I'm having another little thingy with NAV2005. So now and then with the Full System scan I'm getting results that it only scanned about 100 files while there are actually more than 40.000 files to be scanned (if I recall).

Anyone has similar problems?

My problem still exists with this release. Re-installed everything, still the same thing. I'm beginnning to sense that this is the wrong forum to ask this Confused

Why not use the best antivirus there is?
And no it´s not Norton.

It´s called NOD32 and it´s the only antivirus that made it through tests without a single failed. And not just once, more than 20 times in a row.

Ontopic: I used to have Norton, but it takes up too much valueble recourses. Plus NOD32 is better...

nah, it doesn't miss a lot. besides the fact it still uses a single scan engine.
on the other hand, like with any popular product (like IE for example) it's a lot more vulnerable to attacks.. (most virusses etc these days have some kinda string included that automaticly shuts down most of the popular antivirus scanners so they wouldn't get detected, altho i'm sure norton must have some sort of solution against it)
i just find it to be a very bloated product, especially the GUI in general, it looks so bloated.

i used to have norton as well, and i found it a decent product, till i did a format & surfed around for some different products, and i'm a lot happier with what i got now. Wink
norton is a good start i suppose, but there's a lot better products, just my 2c.

EMu:

This error seems to be caused by corrupt temp files.

Here is the solution: (assuming Win XP, but will work in other Win flavors manually clearing temp windows and IE files).

Delete your temp files in windows and also delete your IE browser temp files (including offline). Easiest (and safest) way is to use Disk Cleanup found in Start->Programs->Accessories-System Tools->Disk Cleanup.
Check off everything in there. Time to clean up that drive anyway, right? Wink

After that's done doing its thing, scan your drives again. Make sure you check scan inside compressed files in NAV's options, as it's not enabled by default.

Should be good to go... Very Happy

Trust me, I had this same error myself, and it was driving me nuts. I think it's a bug that a live update download will eventually fix. 2004 had no problems whatsoever scanning these same files, BTW.

I did exactly what you suggested in your post, but without any luck Sad
...
I wonder what this could have caused, maybe the first stand-alone install of NAV2005 (it wasn't nuked however)?

Even the Symantec Knowledge base didn't help out.

Similar error, same solution as I told you about...

You still have some garbage in your temp directories that didn't get cleared. That Disk Cleanup cleans out files a week old or older, I believe. It takes the safe approach in case programs are using the files for some reason.

I manually went in and cleaned out my Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temp (go in Windows Explorer - not IE - and type %Temp% in the address bar and hit enter) and also my Windows\Temp folders. I left the Cookies-History-Temporary Internet Files folders in that, and cleaned out the rest. Then you can clear the rest (temp files) through IE, if that's what you use. You have some kind of "junk" in one of these places that NAV doesn't like.

If you grab the small TMG "ripped" version of NAV2005 (no iso or bin) you'll find that it works. I believe that it may be an earlier pre-release build, however.

I had the exact error message you do now, and this is what fixed mine.
Mine was showing a small amout of files scanned, just like yours...

Alternatively, you could run Symantec Corp. 9 AV or NOD32 if you tired of dicking with getting 2005 to run.... Smile

Good luck...

The error message has to do with moving or deletin the norton folder from its default location in the start menu or with the office plugin being checked.
