Lost was picked up as a 12 episodes series back in 2004. Then somewhere in the middle ABC ordered a full season, and because only 12 episodes where filmed, a hiatus was put to film more content.
And I'm all for personal drama. Those are the best episodes in Battlestar Galactica for example. The Rose and Bernard episode was a real joy last season, as were the three Ecko episodes. But again, where do you draw the line? Clair's episodes are utter crap, as are Charlie's, Hugo's (though I love his character) and some others.

I think it has something to do with liking the character or not . But in any case I have to agree with you that there are a few too many background episodes.

I bet 314 was inspired a bit by Stephen King's 'Autopsy Room 4' and the episode 'The Last Escape' from Alfred Hitchcock Presents where the woman gets buried alive with the dead gravedigger that is supposed to dig her out.

Every show is basically first 13 episodes until the network officially picks them up. Prison Break is a good example. First season at around episode 13 they're about to break out but their plans are foiled. Hell even 24 had the 13 episode thing. In the first season around the 12th-13th hour Jack goes in, kills all the bad guys, and rescues his daughter and wife. Then they continued with a different story.

There's a difference when a show is picked as a 12 episodes show and when a show is picked as a full season show but only 12-13 episodes are ordered as a trial run. Many shows get the latter treatment.
Lost was picked as a half season show, but ABC got greedy and later ordered it as a full season show.

I don't see how it could be anything apart from a nanite cloud, although they have officially refuted this I just think they want it to remain mysterious. Then again why couldn't it get to them in the fond of trees, and whats with the flashing light.
The writers themselves probably have no fucking clue how they are going to explain it.

I think it was scanning her eyes/face and found out she was one of the others, which it wasn't designed to attack.

Anyone else thought it was funny that the superior FLYING smoke couldn't get past the barrier while the little humans just climed over it two episodes before?

I don't think it can fly that much... It just hovers from the ground at the same height...

@headshot: This is an EXCELLENT episode, lots of more backstory told about Juliet/Dharma. I love season3 so much more than season2.

Wait now i'm confused, are Dharma and 'The Others' different entities or what?
As far as I understood it, they were at odds, with Dharma referring to them as 'Hostiles'. If 'The Others' are the remnant's of the Dharma Initiative, then who are the 'Hostiles'?
