Personally the game I keep going back to is natural selection. It is a great (and free) mod for the original Half-Life. It is a mix between RTS/FPS.
The latest versions have CO (combat) maps. These levels give you xp with kills that you can get upgrades for. With the extra levels (xmenu) amx plugin it gets even better.
Lots of fun.

Well I'm like 30 mins thru FarCry, tell the truth it doesn't look as good as I remembered it, but maybe it's cuz of all the over-the-top next-gen games that came out recently (Oblivion, etc.)
One of the best engines EVER, simply beautiful.
The perfect shooter I have to say, there's just nothing missing.
And playing it at everything maxed out (even tho it's not a real trouble, it runs at 70+ FPS) is a joy for me simply cuz I could never do it before.
Been playing MP2 aswell...man someone do another one like that already! (F.E.A.R doesn't apply.)
Blame! don't act!

I tried to play Oblivion but was weirded out.
First the game says it doesn't "recognise my hardware", then it slows down in specific sections during the intro, and it slows down considerably whenever calculation occurs, e.g a RAT comes to attack me or something, it doesn't slow down, it just freezes for a split second, and I'm sitting there playing having the biggest WTF of my life.
I speeded out of the sewers to see weather it would slow down when you finally see all that landscape, well to my surprise it didn't slow down for a sec & FRAPS reported over 70FPS.
I was playing @ 1024x768 and everything I could think of maxed.
Only thing I could think of is a mod I installed, the AFLevelMod, which could make sense why every time something related to skill calculations happens (getting attacked, etc.) it skipped.
I dunno, I'm still weirded out.
Blame! don't act!

It may be sound-related. I mean there is some incompatibility that screws you when a sound effect plays (when they attack you etc) Try lowering the sound acceleration, updating drivers or something. Also lower all graphics to minimum and test.
EDIT: Have you patched the game ?

Totally uninstall your sound drivers and install new ones. That must be your problem.

Ok now I'm really clueless.
I re-installed everything, same error occurred.
And this time I notice in dxdiag tool it says Sound1 and there's Sound 2, with the second not being the "default" device.
I have a G965Express intel chipset.
I know the mobo and the chipset suck, but I will be able to afford replacing them only in a couple of months or so, what the heck do I do?
A little addition:
Quote: | Problem: The error message "Your sound card does not support hardware buffering. Sound will only playback from software buffers" appears when I try to run Microsoft's DirectX Diagnostic tool.
Solution: This error will appear on systems using VIA's AC'97 audio codec, which you only need to worry about if you're using the integrated audio on a VIA-based motherboard. What the message really means is that your audio system doesn't support the 22,050Hz audio sampling rate, which is one frequency tested for by DXdiag. Microsoft notes that this problem only applies to the WinXP operating systems. Relax. The built-in mixer within Windows will automatically switch to a sampling rate that is supported by the VIA codec. Your actual playback or recording will remain unaffected. |
The intel mobo isn't via based...is it?! VIA is my worst nightmare!
Blame! don't act!

@ Hellbeans
What are the names that Dxdiag gives for the Sound 1 and Sound 2 devices?
For example mine are Sound 1: Realtek AC97 Audio , Sound 2 : Modem #1 Line Playback , all at full acceleration.
You can change the default device through Control Panel ---> Sound and Audio Device Properties ---> Audio tab (also other interesting settings there)
