So i've decided i might SLI my graphics now i've upgraded my CPU to an X2 6000. Atm i have a BFG 8800GTS 640MB, just wondering if its possible to SLI this with the 320MB version of the same card ?, or will i need to get another 640MB card? Also would the below PSU be able to handle the SLI strain?
PSU: http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/power_management/ocz_evostream_power_supply (The 720W version)
i5 4670K @ 4.2ghz/ Gigabyte GTX 980ti Xtreme Gaming Windforce/ CORSAIR 2x8 GB DDR3 2133MHZ / CREATIVE X-FI / MSI Z87-G45/ 6TB HD'S/WIN10 PRO/LOGITECH Z-5500 5.1

8800 (GTX or GTS) in SLI is a waste of money. It has been proven in so many review sites.

It has been proven in so many review sites. | Well i dunno a single card that can reach the theoretical combined performance of two 8800 Ultra cards, thus it may be a waste of money because there is no need for this in current games or poor drivers regarding SLI, still the relevant purpose of SLI is to reach performance you can't have otherwise, and in this case money rarely is an issue.

By the time 8800 SLI becomes relevant, there will be new cards to offer even better performances. Better to save the cash now, and buy one of those.

I'll agree with you on that, if someone needs a huge resolution or graphical rendering, SLI is a good solution for them. Otherwise, it's a waste of money...

just to answer the original question further, yes they have to be the same card, but i believe they can be from different manufacturers so long as the specs are the same. i *think*... someone should be able to confirm that.
