OK, I am too lazy to create a thread because I am playing these Space Sims we have all been talking about. Can someone do a Star Wolves 2 one? I played the demo and LOVED it, but I think that was at least a year ago. Sorry to use this thread but us space simmers have had a pretty fukin good week and my rambling has started more than one thread..

Welcome to a world of space battles and political intrigue. Here, the spirit
of knighthood competes with the lust for profit, danger lurks behind every
corner, and sometimes, everything depends on a single choice. Welcome to a
world where only a true STAR WOLF can survive.
It is 2232. Nearly seven years have passed since the time of the first Star
Wolves. Unable to withstand the military onslaught of the Empire, the
oncepowerful transgalactic corporations were forced to fall back to the far
frontiers of the explored space, where the ruling hand of the Empire had no
influence. There, they formed the Independent Corporations Union. They dream
of the day when they will be able to return to their former power and
influence.
The study of the hundreds of suddenly-frozen Berserk ships, and the capture
of Alien ships served as a springboard for the rapid development of new
technologies. A relative calm befell the world, broken only by the
occasional attack of disorganized and apolitical pirate groups.
The Imperial Forces continue to wage war on the Aliens, but Humankind has
not yet managed to establish contact with them. Pushed back into one of
the few remaining unexplored sectors, and posing fierce resistance, the
Aliens continue to pursue their unknown goals.
But war is a lucrative business, and soon the fragile truce will be broken.
The use of fully autonomous mercenary squads will resume, and this means
that the famed Star Wolves team will return to this dangerous but lucrative
business. The entire galaxy is open to you. Are you ready to dive into this
maelstrom of high-risk decisions and breathtaking adventures?

You can turn down the difficulty, but what would be better is to learn how to take 'em out, which can be difficult. At the beginning, this game's fights are sooo tedious, but now I enjoy them.
1) Press Page Down to match your targets speed, travelling at max makes connecting shots harder, as well as dodging shots
2) Put your crosshair on the little blue diamond that shows your enemies trajectory. Know to fire only when it's near the ship (this means the ship is going slower, higher chance of hitting)
3) When the enemy stops and turns around and opens fire on you, use your strafe buttons (QEWASD) to mess up his aim. Also, double tapping any of these gives a small boost in the direction at the expense of energy.
4) Keep the pressure on them. Nothing sucks more than getting a ship down to the last bit of health, and then it shields regen. The shields make all these dogfights a little too long, but it goes both ways.
5) Try to always close the distance with your afterburner
6) I hate missiles so far. Too much money for too little damage. I don't know if this changes later, but so far I've been relying purely on my starting turbolaser (in free mode).
7) Most importantly, be patient. After 5 or so dogfights you'll get the hang of it.
Good luck

so far my thoughs:
good graphics and a good feel. really hard to get into though. hard to figure out about everything. which stations you can come into or what material is used by what foe. if they added a real save game option, and some way to introduce players with the content, it would be a true succesor to Freelancer. Maybe.

Somebody fuckin help me - I have no problem with the one on one dogfights. However - some of the $4,000 missions pit you up against 3 or 4 guys. Even with 3 wingmen at my side, there's no way my little interceptor can survive the onslaught of missiles and fire coming my way (the enemy completely ignore my wingmen.) I have my shields upgraded to Level 30, my weapons at Level 60 (which allows the use of those tier 3 double shot missiles, which are very nice btw), but I still can't fuckin handle group fights. No matter how much yanking and banking and turning I do, the amount of firepower from 4 ships is just not possible. Ideas?
Also, a helpful tip Trevah didn't mention above - you can divert your shield power to either the front or back of your ship instead of both sides. This means that one side will be exposed, but the other side will regenerate twice as fast. Use the Numpad 2 key by default and look at the bottom left of your HUD for the little arcs to toggle front, back, both.
Also, when selecting a quest, what the hell does the QUEST FOR selection change? I once took a quest from an EMD station to destroy an EMD ship, questing for EMD. I lost 10% faction. What the fuck?
Is there any way to cancel quests you have accepted?
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

When you hire a wingman a short list of comm options becomes available in the left corner (above the picture of your fighter).
To order your wingman to attack a ship, target that ship and press "1" to select your first wingman ("2" for your second wingman, "3" for third and "4" for all wingmen) and press "1" to tell him to attack your current target.

You go up to any fighter ship that shows up white on your radar, pull up comms via the P key, and Join Formation. You can't see how much they cost until AFTER you've hired them.
Smart developers......sigh

i know it can become a very boring game but after all, they all are the same: go there, kill him/destroy that, return and you start all over again. i did not play SF because my computer does not met the minimum req but i know SF is more or less something like Freelancer or Starlancer. and these games are probably the best ever!!!

When I went into a mission in Cephagus or something, there were about 4 ord fighters (rank 1) and I just went in guns blazing. All the sudden 2-3 guys jumped in to help me. It was weird because I got the quest for EMD, but the guys that helped me were that other alien race that starts with an E.
Immunity wrote: | Also, when selecting a quest, what the hell does the QUEST FOR selection change? I once took a quest from an EMD station to destroy an EMD ship, questing for EMD. It just sounds like you were exposed to some bad game logic.
And to everyone else that doesn't like this game: it's different. I've yet to play the story, but the voice overs in free-mode are quite good, the graphics are good, the upgrade system is definitely interesting (mine to get materials to upgrade the ship, definitely helps early on), the questing system, etc. But there are a LOT of problems. Those of you wondering, it's definitely worth a try.

yeah i know that , but other games mask it with movies or CGI or NPC talk with a AI model or a story and not - Jim looks for Jax , he is a EMD and she is now a Pirate harrrrrr - thats just lame
if they only added a moving picture not a static one or landing on planets this game would be great but now its only a space arcade wannabe that looks and plays like Starmageddon 2: Project Freedom with a crippled trading system
Don`t get me wrong i love arcade games but if this game like Starmageddon 2 would be from ground up a arcade shooter then this game would be fantastic but they added to much and made it a crippled dream

Yes EVE-O is redarded in many ways, such as skills training, or flying from place to place taking 90% of your game time. But I still respect that game and it's devs, coz they did something original other than elves and orcs and succeeded. If you are space games fan, giving EVE online's 14 day free trial a go is a must.

EVE Offline? No thank you.
The skill timer gimmick in that game makes it completely and utterly pointless.
You progress at the same rate regardless of whether you play for 10 minutes a week or 12 hours a day as long as you log in to que up your next skill training.
It isn't a game, its more like an exercise in making and keeping a schedule set to the skill timer.
Offtopic, sorry, had to rant
|
Makes -what- completly and utterly pointless?
It's the best way to solve the issue of allowing people with less time to play the game not to be gimped compared to the no-lives suckers. "Oh, I need to go on a vacation for a month, shit I'm going to fall behind..." no you won't.
Regardless, a person who plays the game without actually playing it will have no use for his skills will he? Your point is a non-argument, the reason you train skills is so you can use them, if you don't, then that's your short coming as a player. Not a fault with the game.
People who don't play the game don't earn any money, nor do they get any contacts (it's actually a game where such things matter).
I'm glad it doesn't just give the "sit and grind missions 8 hours a day 7 days a week"-people the opportunity to be "uber". Lacking social skills should be something you get punished for, not the opposite.
Your argument is actually so silly I think you're joking.

You can do everything in one solar system if that's your wish. Travel and exploration is something some do to eg. trade, or locate systems with different resources.
If you had bothered with understanding the game, you would also know there are ways to instantly travel between two locations.

Again, I would love to play EVE. But last time I tried it, it truly was just too over my head.
But the corporate plotting and backstabbing really does intrest me in that game. If I had someone that could show me the ropes in game, I might give it another go sometime.

I don't recall that at all. Maybe it wasn't implemented a year ago? Thats the last time I tried EVE and I don't think tutorial covered anything on traveling between two locations instantly. Whatever the case may be, the fact remains EVE's travel times are insane. Community even made a mod that shows your ETA so you can go outside and enjoy sun for like an hour until your autopilot queue is complete.

They were implemented March 2006.
Jumpclones is what they're called.
But even before that you could clonejump between locations by setting your clone to one station and self-destruct, waking up in the new location.
The best way to learn EVE is to join a corporation such as EVE-University. It's basically a school for nubs where you get to learn the ropes. What makes EVE both hard and fun is that nearly everything from territorial warfare to the market, to getting jobs is player driven. Hence if you're a social creature, your learning curve becomes far less slanted, and unless you've got bad luck and meet some tards, the eve community is generally helpful. CCP even has a staff employed to help new players (called Aurora).
If you try everything out on your own, it's going to be a rough experience. You will feel that everything is pretty empty. That's how I felt when I first started playing. It was when you began interacting with people and joined a good corp. that things became more fun. You always got pointers from those who knew a little bit more. And eventually you started to know the ropes well enough to know how to start have fun on your own (though I prefer the group activities).
As for travel, EVE now has warp to zero. You no longer need to approach the gate, you land straight at them when you warp to them. 10 jumps takes about 1-2 minutes, where it used to take 8-9.

SF2 it´s not a top space sim game but it´s have some fun and yes after some time it´s monotonic and boring, but better than darkstar one. X3 for me it´s boring too.
Try Parkan II or Starshatter The gatering storm (very good game with capital ships, fighters and realy good BSG mods)
