I have a socket 939 mainboard. If I upgrade to a AM2 mainboard can I keep my 2 gigs old DDR 400 ? Or do I have to buy new ddrII ?

I think you need ddr 2 Smile The motherboard you're getting will confirm this.

Well you don't have to. No one is forcing you to make the minor upgrade Smile

I would rather go Intel, there you can still buy some low-cost Asrock motherboard with ddr1 support and a nice Intel CPU, then when you have more money you change both the motherboard and the ram sticks.

Yes, or just go sck939 route with a fast single core... and then keep your memory. This would probably be the cheapest option - and the minor was from 939 to X2...

You guys are right. I just made a "deal" with a friend. I'm selling him some of my components for about 150 euros.

Then I'll spend that AND about 170 more euros (that's 320 euros) for motherboard/ram/cpu.

Please make some nice suggestions for these 3 parts (gaming rig) Note that I will keep my 7800gtx.

Not too many games optimized for dual core...Supreme Commander is the only one I can think of anyway...

really though if it's a gaming rig like you suggest I think the general consensus would go with a fast, single core setup. At least that was the advice I got when I was looking for upgrades to my old pc (still living in Socket A world wooot!!!)

i can has computar?!

I went from an A64 3700+ (2gb DDR, 7800GT etc) to a Core2Duo, 2gb DDR2 and I noticed a difference so say the least. Ofc for games my 8800GTS made the biggest difference but still it's damn much better in windows and all.

I just went through this myself, when my 939 board fried. I had to replace my DDR400 with DDR2 800 for my new AM2 board and CPU. Didnt really want to foot that bill at the time, but with that and the 3800 x2, from a 3000 x64, and a new GA M61-P, with lots of OC tweeks Really was a huge performance boost in all areas. Not the top of the line stuff, but keeps this poor basterd in the game.
