Whoever said stretch and warm up is bang on the money, when I first started getting my cardio back in shape I got shin splints, they fucking hurt let me tell you.

I advise you get some good trainers or sneakers as you yanks call them and remember anyone can run on flat ground and call it a great workout....try to include some uphill and downhill roads, I ran 10km yesterday on the treadmill and let me tell you that was some boring workout...think I'll stick to running outdoors.

If running isnt your thing you should try doing burpees, they are great for cardio imo.

Damn my path sucks for right now, just flat the whole way pretty much. I figured once I get the ability to go farther and longer I can make it a ways down this other road that has some hills. Very Happy

Hey congrats on at least getting out there. If it makes you feel any better I go to the gym almost everyday. I have been bad this week. I do between 40-60 min of cardio on the eliptical machine because it is easier on the knees and stuff. I have it one of the highest levels as well. I then go off and do weights off the machines. At home a have a weight bench and that 'block or brick" system of free weights. I usually swim 2 km about 2 times a week.

One day I missed the gym and went for a run instead. My weight is low enough now I don't believe I am going to wreck my knees. Let me tell you I was SHOCKED the next day I was in so much pain for a 20 min casual run/jog so don't feel bad because I am in shape and I was in PAIN. Especially an ass muscle. You used totally different muscles or something when you run naturally.

I was told if you exercise too much you retain water. I am a fuzzy eater too so I always make sure I drink lots of water and a least one sport drink for the electrolytes. I think mine are a bit fucked because I get really bad cramps in my legs and feet.

Keep it up but don't push yourself too much in the beginning you hurt yourself.

I suggest a personal trainer maybe for 2 times to get you on the right track. They know their stuff. I don't believe they are as expensive as you might think. Also gyms sometimes will give consolations if you are a member. Fitness World, One of my gyms does free body fat for free. That way you can really check your improvements. I also took a bunch of before and after pictures.

Keep with it. Some people go to church, I go to the gym. My body is my temple. heheh

Totally true no pain no gain but you have to work within reason. (like marks comment too)

You can't hurt yourself tho and go to hard. I used to use the stair master but it totally fucked up my achillies tendon. I swear everytimes I walked even up hill I damaged it more. It took more than 7 months before it healed.

Plus if you wanna look cut you gotta shed the fat which is mostly through diet.

Man....YOU ARE MASOCHISTS.

Tell to you physician or trainer that you started your workout with jogging after years of sitting behind a computer Very Happy.
If you want a stroke or heart attack or joints damage in your knees then you are on the right track Razz

A human body needs to accustomize with the new agenda and slowly. If you shock your body then it will protect itself (muscle ache etc). If you haven't trained for some time then start your workout with walking. And I mean with tempo and not "sightseeing".

I consulted with my trainer and he suggested that I shoult start with pole walking (skiing without skies Wink) and believe me....8km crosscountry pole walking is a killer orkout...but without pain and stuff Razz

(Don't do 8 km as the first distance. 2-3km is enough for starters).

I've been pole walking for about a month now and I lost 12 pounds, lost a great deal of cholesterol (started with cholesterol level 7 and now it's 4), feel good and go walking every evening with pleasure.

"No no pain no gain"...hahaha Very Happy

this is quite true for anyawys lol. I'm in alot better shap than poor old stooz here, I've just been off work for a few months so I've gotten lazy.

[edit] Ok stooz, I did it, I forced myself lmao. and im glad I did, some old lady made me laugh. I was walking up to a corner getting my heart rate back down (3am btw) and planned on jogging again once i got to the corner. Well at the time I got to the corner some older lady was walking through her fenced in yard to get to her card, well as I started jogging i saw her going back through the fence door latching it shut and walking to her house. I wasn't paying much attention to her but as I had passed by her and she realized I was just jogging I barely heard her go "Oh" as in "Oh he's just jogging" It all came together when I heard the fence door yet again so I turned my head and saw her going back out to her car to leave lol. She thought I was after her lmao

Last question.. what sort of schedule should I be on? Run everyday? Every other day? 3 times a week? Twice a week?

I have a very similar life as yours, i started doing something for myself about 6 months ago ... at first running for 1-2 times a week for 15 minutes nearly killed me Smile now after 6 months i run 5 times a week for 20 minutes without pauses and i have lost about 10 kg. I think doing an overall 2-3 hours of gymnastic per week nicely distributed in all the days and a good amount of willpower are the key !

I am jogging too. Last year I got up to 6 miles, 4 days a week. Then I got shin splints, a chest infection, then very bad flu and I had to stop jogging. I started again now and I am running 3 miles, 3 days a week at a slow speed. My goal is to do 2 miles in 12 minutes and 5 miles in 35 minutes. The best I have got so far is 2 miles in 13:14 minutes and 5 miles in 40 minutes. That was on a treadmill though, it's harder on the road or track.

In a few weeks I am going to start adding in sprint training.

Here is some stuff I learned:

You have to start off slow with walking, then short slow runs and build up very gradually.

    You need good running shoes.

Warm-up and cool-down with walking and slow jogging for about 0.5 miles.

Stretch after you run (don't bother stretching before).

Don't run too much on the hard surface road, run on tracks or dirt or treadmill.

Make sure you drink alot of water through out the day. After you have sweated alot its good to have an electrolite drink (lucozade, gatorade etc.).

Don't listen to music if you run on the road! Watch out for cars!

It's very helpful to do swimming and other stuff on your non-running days.

    Look up fartlek training.

Don't push too hard. You should be able to speak a conversation with someone while running. If you are testing yourself for a personal best you can run hard, perhaps even until you vomit.

Do these exercises 3 times a week on non-running days:

I'm lazy, haven't run in a year or so ... but some good advice is to run with a friend. It was the only thing that kept me going when I hurt a lot Smile

You ever tried jogging and having a conversation with a friend? It just not fun! Laughing Laughing buy an mp3 player, or an ipod and jog while listening to some upbeat music Cool keeps your mind occupied and your body moving and you can complain when you sleep Laughing

yep, passes the time well. I ran a fair amount back in uni, off and on mostly during the summers. Only ever ran with a friend. When I left school I tried running with an mp3 player and failed miserably at keeping up with it.

Yeah I know what you mean with the friend / partner thing. I used to jog nightly. Everyday. When they're gone it's just not as competative enough. It's just running. You'd rather be home Very Happy

You gotta push through that. Very Happy

Yah I've been running at night only at like midnight, 1am.. haha. Very peaceful but gets boring I guess, but I am able to get past that.

I was forced to cool it for a few days, damn my shins were getting very upset. Sad

Lots of good advice in here though, glad some of the rest of you are up and movers. Very Happy

Just thought I'd add its probably not good running that late at night as your body is wanting to shut down so once your done your mind/head is too active to want to sleep/shut down straight away...aside from the fact that running through around my area that time of night lets just say you can run into some unsavoury people Very Happy

I found a way to counter the thing that always didn't allow me to continue doing a physical activity: doing it in my house (actually doing it with a stepper) and watching that couple of terabytes of anime i never had the time to watch ... i felt no more bored while doing something for my health !

Of course, I have to be in great shape for my job, but once I was in horrible physical condition too. I actually had to lose 30kg to apply to be a cop! It does get easier, pretty fast. In a month or two you'll be running 8km without pausing for a walk. Just run at least 3-4 times a week for optimal gains, also try to run at dusk or dawn when the sun is low. It really, REALLY makes a difference. Remember to buy good shoes. Asics, Mizuni, etc.
