Thats a 2_0 shader effect. Written by Valve. Not that hard (!) See the kleiner_lab video of E3 2003.

ive seen poor attempts at this, this is a great touch though and i honestly dont believe it would be easy to make, having perfected things like that is a big smile for me because it should mean the rest is that standard Very Happy

Most things are done by shaders. The whole dynamic lightning of D3 is based on shaders. But since DX9 there is the HLSL (High Level shadering Language), which is a C Style language. It allows the developer to think about what he wants to do (writing a cool shader) instead of playing around with the GPU (normally, shaders had to be written in ASM). An experienced programmer will do such a magnifaction very easy. A very much more complicated effect is for example the "Heat Effect" of Doom 3.

I doubt it's that easy, otherwise we would have seen it more often.

Of course it is not that easy, and even an experienced programmer has to understand and practice writing shaders, because the hard part is the math.

Maybe you misunderstood me, I just wanted to say, that this effect isn't that special since we saw more interesting shaders in D3, and even in the Videos of HL2. The magnifaction is a magnifaction of textures by ps and a retransformation of the vertices.

I'll only translate the conclusion :
positive:
Brilliant use of physics
Big variety of gameplay between levels
Very nice ingame animations
Lots of original gameplay elements.

negative:
No multiplayer Deathmatch
AI sqaudmates sometimes get in your way

PC Gameplay says : Valve succeeds to bring new gameplay elements into a overcrowded genre. Really nice work!

Thats about it Very Happy

The guy at PC Gamer wrote in the review something about "the 20 hours" you play , is the game only 20 hours or what?

[Edit]

On page 71 (jpg nr6) he wrote the following: "There are a couple of moments in these twenty hours where something isnt perfect in its pace or placing, but these are minor..."

20 hours sounds like a perfect amount of time to me, thats double the length of fable. Smile

I'm sure those 20 hours are full of variety, and as long as it's a blast while you play i'm not worried. I loved max payne, but that was rather short.

I'm sure mods will make sure it'll take a long time before you get bored of the game.

Anyone know the length of the original HL?

20 hours seem short Very Happy i mean its half life 2! it's a game you will constantly want to play and it being just 20 hours would last no longer than 3 days of intense playing. Heck all of you guys will beat it in a week... it better have some major replay value. Very Happy

but then again the guy just prolly ran around the maps doing what ever just to explore it n such so maybe/prolly the game is much shorter Very Happy heck i spent 30 minutes in the first max payne level jsut running around and having fun Very Happy

A reviewer?Obviously he has to check out the whole game to make a fair review.

I thought the length of the original HL was fine, if anything possibly a bit too long. I bet that was not much more then 20 hours, if at all.

As long as it's a good 20 hours, i don't mind. It's when a game drags on that it can get annoying. I'd prefer 20 hours of variety to 40 hours of doom style gameplay.

Unfortunately those people are stupid. I remember little kiddies playing Mafia on my PC. They skipped every cutscene just to play the action. They were uninterested in story related things. Why? Because there are childs.

But please: Are those reviewers@PC Gameplay childs? As far as I am concerned not physically.

cheating would make the game a lot easier which would ruin the experience. which would lower the final score Laughing I don't think the reviewer would cheat just so they can beat the game with a record Shocked

I tip i can give to everyone is to record when playing (using the console). I´ve started doing this in game were it is possible and it´s alot of fun watching yourself play. And HL2 is the perfect game to record cus there is alot of stuff your probably would want to save.

20 hours aint too bad. Infact, I think it's the perfect amount for a FPS. I can never play a single FPS that's longer (not like there are too many). Besides, leave this game to the mods, peoples! Peace,

Indeed, I like it how they instantly bring the bad news about there being no Half Life 2 multiplayer game. There only is CounterStrike, even with the same plain original CS levels. That's a big NO-No for me!

Also, I noticed the review stating an internet connection is REQUIRED for HalfLife2: gamers who get the game must first register at Valve's (Steam?) system in order to 'unlock' the game. I thought this would only apply to the Steam version of the game, so does it apply to the 'real' one as well?

If so, release groups might have a hard time cracking it
