Major problem!

I backed up registry.
Now, I cant import it.

Error: Cat import xxx.reg. Not all data was successfully written to registry. Some keys are open by system or other processes.

XP Pro

Tried in safe mode- same error. Now, my keyboard doesnt work. Cant type. Only can use the mouse.

Please- any help appreciated. Seems something is locking up registry so I cant overwrite it.

Tried system restore? Choose a restore point before you changed/backed up the registry.

I had system restore turned off. Tried it - no points. The .reg file is like 150 MB. What is the purpose of exporting it when you cant even import it back?!??! Man, Ill tell ya... So frutrating. I have a backup that I cant even use.
I tried merging it same error. Is there a way to import it in recovery console? My PC still boots up..But keyboard doesnt work at all and I lost internet and some apps don work.

The export went fine. No errors. Is there some kind of .reg file or equivalent I can just delete in dos mode or something and put my backup in its place?

I did read those before. This does not tell me how to import a good registry. It tells me how to create brand new registry. I have a working backup of my reg file. All I want to do is pull it back in. It seems though- the reg file is broken into 5 files..So I dont know how to break this 1 .reg file apart.

delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default

The .reg file backup you made is not complete. It doesn't contain any security info, nor does it contain reparse points. If you want to back up the full registry you should use a backup utility.

You should better reinstall Windows XP than trying to fix it by importing some registry information.

Actually, I might not have been complete in my previous post, you might be able to recover your registry from the reg file by using ERD Commander, which is part of Winternals Adminstrator Pack, I know it has a regedit, it might include the import function as well.

It will be just the computer stuff of course, not user specific, but you might be able to recover enought to make it bootable again, and import the user specific part from windows.

Tried:
ERD Commander 2005 expires 9999 - ran regedit - imported file - hourglass for about 5 min then nothing.
PC Repair CD DR. Disc - was very nice. pics and all. Import registry was more advanced, however it failed towards end. Error.....

So, its useless. I can enter windows, but no keyboard and no internet. Im burning my files now. Will format and install XP again. Thanks for your help...

Formatted, Partitioned this time!! Now 1 partition is 50GB for OS and apps. Other 200GB is for rest. Runs 100% better than before. Boot up time cut in half. And PC now reboots without having to shutdown then power back on. Man, winXP needs a reformatting every 6 months it seems.
