Seems like a great waste if you ask me, Quake III still got decent graphics, and I play it now and then for the gameplay, not the graphics...

Old..

and it needed like 20-30 computers connected together to run at a decent speed if i remember correctly..

Edit:

"This is realtime speed for a virtual intel CPU with about 36 GHz (to be more precise: a cluster with 20 AMD XP1800 was used)."

good luck.. if you have 20 computers you can runt it lol Very Happy

shit!!!
maybe with dedicated hardware it could be faster?

From the site:

"But it is sooooo slow?" you may ask... "
"The solution for fast raytracing is a real hardware capable of raytracing. Saarland University is working on a prototype. It is clocked with 90 MHz and has the raytrace power similiar to a virtual P4-12 GHz. The prototype uses only one pipeline, parallelization can be done. Also more GPUs can be used on one card."

well, actually its more a technological experiment than a real game but in my opinion its a quite refreshing approach ...

in terms of perfomance raytracing could easily exceed rasterization, but unfortunately i don't know of any hardware (and im quite sure none exists) which can handle raytracing in homecomputers ... Sad

i d rather go for doom3 or hl2 gfx on dedicated hardware with some tricks than this raytracing experiment. Or the next unreal engine, which should also be looking great and will be running on dedicated gfx hardware, no need for expensive clusters...

Looks pretty shit if you ask me.

It must be more of an experiment then anything, because raytracing just isn't pratical at the moment.

This is a old project, but the project is not the Q3 remake it's the OpenRT API and to develop hardware 3d card who can handle it.

http://www.openrt.de/ for more info on real-time ray-tracing.

Sure it look like crap now with the q3 screenshots bit it's just because it's not done. With all the advantage RT have, I'm sure it's the next big step in video games. Just look at movies done with apps like 3dsmax,.. the renderer of this is ray-tracing that's why it take so much time to render the movie but give impresive results. Bring this in real time it would be awesome.

You can watch some video on the openrt site, the one in Mixed Reality with the television casting the color on walls and the massive model one with the boeing 777 who explain it take a lot less processing power with huge models than "normal" rendering.
