|
 |
I wanted to get a new graphics card, to be able to play the upcoming games (Bioshock, Assassin's creed) at least with normal settings. No need for cutting edge technology, just something that is not overpriced...
ATM I have got a Nvidia 6600GT, and i.e. Overlord had to be played at minimum settings to run decent.
I wanted to spend around 150-170€ (=about 200$).
I need a new CPU, too. My mainboard is a Gigabyte K8NF-9, so that should be enough for an Athlon FX. Which one would you say is recommandable for 100€ max.?

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (2,2 GHz, AM2, 2*512kB) €105,00
can't get cheaper than that unless u can find it even cheaper
or get AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (2,0 GHz, AM2, 2*512kB) €69,50
and overclock it to 4200+ if u have decent memory
this way u can add xtra 20 and get another gig of ram if u need it

I have a Athlong 64 3000+ now. Is there really so much more power in the 4200+ to warrant the 100€?

I would keep the cpu/mainboard (unless its still agp?) for now and buy a decent graphics card + more memory (if you have 1gig or less).

I'm not really broke, but I don't wanna spend 600€ on a gfx card that will cost 200€ a year later. So I just buy one for about 200€ or a bit less, and then a new card in a year. I don't need to play everything on max. settings...

Detailed video card specifications and reviews are great - that is, if you have the time to do the research. But at the end of the day, what a gamer needs is the best video card available for a particular price.
If you don't have the time to research the benchmarks, or if you don't feel confident enough in your ability to make the right decision, fear not. We at Tom's Hardware Guide have come to your aid with a simple list of the best gaming cards offered for the money. We update every month, and it's now time for the August 2007 version of the best gaming video cards for the money. |

According to LeoNatan the nvidia 8800GTS 320 mb is a fucking shitty card that's no good for the price nor the quality. Can you see now on tomshardware that's a recommended card for ppl who are on a budget? Or your pride will not let you say that's a good card for budget folks? Or am I the only one that likes the card like you've told me? At least the guys on tomshardware likes the card.

GUYS.... FFS!!
8600 GT?! Stop bullshiting him...

Best PCIe Card For ~$140Radeon X1950 PRO
With no high-performance DirectX 10 cards under $200 to compete against it, the relatively powerful X1950 PRO is having a field day. Yes, the 8600 GTS is a DirectX 10 card, but it's more expensive than the X1950 PRO, and isn't in the same performance league when higher resolutions are used.
The card's other competition is the 7900 GS, which the X1950 PRO will beat in most benchmarks at stock speeds. However, 7900 GS pricing seems to have recently risen to about $160, leaving the X1950 PRO free to reign in this price segment.

The 1950 gt is the same card - just a bit cheaper... so... get that card...
Or - as one said above --> 1950 xt(x)
There are only 3 or 4 cards worth the money right now (imho that is...):
midrange - good dx9 card - fine for another year - cheap: 1950 gt/pro
midrange - good dx9 card - fine for another year - not so cheap: 1950xt(x)
Highend - good dx9 card - maybe, just maybe, playable framerates in upcoming dx10 games, expensive - buy if money doesn`t matter: 8800 gtx
8800 gts isn`t worth the money - cheaper cards will work fine for the last dx9 games - the card is to weak for newer dx10 games... to expensive right now... if the 8800 gts 640 would cost around 200 $ - i`d say get one of these....

Or am I the only one that likes the card like you've told me? At least the guys on tomshardware likes the card. | He may be a little excessive here, i am pretty sure the 8800 GTS 320 mo is a very good card, as far as you won't try to play at "very" high resolutions (e.g. over 1600×1200 [4:3] or 1680×1050 [16:10]) with all the eye candy. |
Exactly. That's what i've told him. I just think that he just has to try and see and agree with other ppl opinions..and when he sees he's wrong he just has to let his pride by side and agree with others. |
When I was arguing that the 320MB version was shitty, the money factor wasn't important. 320Mb is just not enough for all those console ports with high res textures. You're saying that it's good for lower resolutions, but ffs, resolution isn't the only factor for video card memory. Texture size, AA, AF all pretty much require it.
And recommending a x1950 over 8600GT is like recommending a x800 over a 6600GT.

I am not going to use anything over 1280x1024 anyway, as I only have a 17" LCD. So high resolutions don't matter.
I might check out the ATI cards, they seem to be cheaper. And in this price sector, good DX10 performance is impossible anyway.
I just want to play games on medium settings, not lowest and slow like I am doing now...
About the CPU:
I just checked the CPU Support List.
The highest supported cpu I could find was a Athlon 64X2 4200+ Toledo for 100€. I just can't find a Fx-60 cpu. Do you think it is worth it, or just wait and buy a better cpu with a new mainboard later?
