180 is a little steep for some dvd's that I just wanna play with. I am not a professional artist and the effects are situational at best. I just want to see how they are done. Purely educational.

Why don't you try http://www.good-tutorials.com?

You you wanna see who things are done, there isn't a better place

EDIT: at least that's what i use, i can' stand staring at videos while some guy explains how it's done, i rather read a description and do it myself

So, I've got 2 of them. Looks pretty nifty.

They cover many aspects while teaching to make something, i.e. movie poster or something.

The tablet helps a lot, and allows some new things, like freehand drawing, and most of all, using the pressure definitions, all dependant on the actual pressure you're using on the tablet's pen.

I've got a really basic Aiptek tablet, cost me €30, it's good enough to fool around and do some minor things.
