what should i get? i run vista, and have an audigy SE currently and it sucks in vista. no im not going back to xp, if u have no input on a good soundcard for vista then stfu.

ah crap, um...PM epsilon for the sound card he has. The thing is friggn nuts. Kicks Creative Labs in the nuts.
I personally got the Sound Audigy ZS 2 platnium (takes breath from long name) and sounds great but dunno how it holds up in vista.

I have the Xmeridian and it works fine in vista and is a great card but they stopped making them. Auzentech has just released the xprelude witch is there newest card and should work fine in vista as well and it has full eax support if you care about such things. But it does not have some of the features that the meridian had yet, they are suppose to add them with a driver update.

I bought an Hercules Game Theather XP really cheap (25 Euros), it's got an external rack, connections for everything you'll ever need and it's guite good

im getting a new cpu too for a midrange sys im buiding form old parts. i need a socket 939 cpu. should i go 32 or 64bit. im looking at amd x2 64 4200's and up.

eh 64 bit holds no purpose unless you want speed in some apps. I personally got the 939 x2 4400+ with the 1MB cache and my system still rocks any game that comes out. Except spiderman 3 lol.
There was a site that put the x2 3800 agains the FX-60 (dual core fx) and they overclocked it and the FX barely beat it.

Um, if you can't tell the difference in sound quality between any onboard sound chipset and a dedicated sound card then i dunno what to say.
IRQ nonsense aside, people pick up sound cards for a reason besides audio quality, which is to reduce CPU load. Going from Realtek integrated to a X-Fi was night and day, performance wise same deal, especially in Battlefield games.

Hoping someone here picks up one of the new Xprelude cards and gives a bit of a review. I've been thinking about stepping up to an XFi since all audigy cards suck balls in Vista. But trying to stay away from Creative since they are greedy mofos(ex selling OpenAL support in certain games, which should be free godammit).
So yeah looking closely at this Xprelude card. Shame tho its 200 bucks(at least on the official site) since you can now get a refurbed XFi for half that.

You can't. Mine just sends it via SPDIF to my home cinema amp. That's all it needs to do. That quality won't change if I use the onboard optical out, or £100000 one.

what do you guys say about SRS Audio Sandbox? I've installed it just out of curiosity, and my music sounds pretty great, especially with the headphones

For games, the X-Fi are preferred.
For audiophiles, look into the Auzentech sound cards. They have the best output, but lack the Creative EAX 3/4/5 API.

i cant find a 4400 an up anywhere lower than 300 bucks. but the 4200 is 80 at newegg. that makes no sense. |

Yeah that's a decent card but I wouldn't pay that price for it. If your gonna shell out $39.99 for a "Sound Blaster 5.1" you might as well fork over a bit more money and get yourself a nice card.
I got my X-Fi Xtreme music for $65 on newegg a loooooooong time ago. And no I didn't buy it just to enable the "Ultra" sound quality setting in BF2 (Although it did make a quite a difference)
I got it because I have a uber elite pwnzor speaker set up and the Realtek onboard audio was not doing it justice. Even without the Crystalizer enabled in the Creative control panel the difference was significant between the onboard and dedicated sound. But then again it's all subjective, some people are audiophiles, while others can't tell the difference between a cow chirping and a bird moo'ing.
