I agree that social/religous pressure can make people do strange things but people have to be strong enough themselves to break those sets of rules if they wish to do so. Not upto to the west to 'liberate' people from religions which they percieve as oppressive. Because then even the people you intend to free, will resist you. They have to feel oppressed themselves and do something about it themselves.
Otherwise it will be no different from the colonialists that wanted to bring the 'light' of christianity to people in africa, asia and south-america.

If women in western countries are constantly bombarded by the media about how they should act and look, then do they really have free will either? |
Good point, that probably has a good bit of impact aswell.
But to me, its really a big difference between media and authority figures in your life. I mean for example, if youre born in a highly religious family, you probably look up to the people in your family, for example your parents. Things the child will learn and take after are what they do, and things they consider to be right and correct.
I hope you see my point, im kinda tired so i find myself not being very good at explaining what i mean

No, i have never suggested anyone go in there and "liberate" them (fuck you Bush and your "liberation"-speeches".
I just remembered something that happened here in Sweden a few years ago. A girl was killed, shot in the head by her own father, and her brother helped to make sure it was done. Now i dont remember the exact reason he did this, but it was a honor killing. Maybe she didnt marry the man they had picked out for her or something, it was something like that though. They DEFENDED themselves with the fact that it was part of their religion.
Fine, be as religious as you want, BUT as soon as you start defending very disrespectful treatment of people and even KILLING them, i dont give a fuck about who you are, it should still be stopped.

your point makes a big assumption - that this woman does not actually want to wear this ninja outfit, a fact we cannot ascertain from just a picture.
There are probably the same underlying social pressures to fit in, the same as women feel here. What's the difference if it's a need to wear a burqa, or the need to have the latest fashions from the gap or wherever it is fucking yuppies do their shopping?

Well, do you think its as disrespectful wearing something from Gap as covering up your entire face and body?
Cause i mean, if the religion just said "Here, we really want you to put this shirt on, otherwise me MIGHT not like you as much", rather than "You HAVE to cover yourself up, its our religion and youre part of it", i wouldnt have cared as much.

my best friend in high school was a jehovah ... more so because his mom was and he just kinda went along with it. but his dad was a right old english drunk so he kinda balanced things out |
Ya lol I will admit though, if there is one religion I can tollerate it's them. The only problem I have with them is the fucking door knocking shit. They aren't corrupted or brainwashed into jack shit. Their just normal people that believe in god. They don't try changing people or any of that jack shti, they just go to their ceremony (kingdom hall) and let their religion stay there.

Who would like to dress that warm in a hot climates? Also there's plenty of underground Afgan 'beauty palors' where women get pampered because they like makeup and nice clothes. But they don't dare go out like that and risk a beating if caught.

Heh
How presumptious of you, if you know what these women like and don't like then go and help them, posting up useless shit on a forum is wack. The image was making light of a situation and yet again another internet nerd took it way to serious.
If you really wanna moan go and do something about the situation, people make their own choices if they choose to be oppressed, beaten, mentally abused thats their fucking problem they are to weak to stand up for themsleves, you can call it a societal problem or a religious one but thats bullshit anyone can walk away from anything there are always options
now if you have finsihed taking the moral high ground lets get back to hating and bitching eachother

Talk about useless shit.. So now people choose to be opressed, beaten up , mentally abused or whatever the shit happens to them? |
Maybe you need this explained to you. If someone acts towards you in a certain way you have a choice as to wether you want that act to continue, obviously the first time you have to experience it and understand it to then make the choice.
Its basic.

Yeah it's really basic, especially when they're indoctrinated from birth and their whole life is based around the practice of that religion. Do you remember how much choice you had when you were a child?
Get a fucking clue.
