|
 |
On a popular italian online news site (www.punto-informatico.it for those of you that know italian) there's report of an america isp, Comsat, that has arrived at the point of banning a family in Rockville in Maryland, for dl too much (if i'm not yet stoned, flat services should work in that way !).
Some of you out there in the u.s.a. can tell more about this kind of facts ??? Are they really starting to do this kind of things ??? You pay (a nice amount of $) for a flat internet connection, and then you get various kinds of penalties for using up all the bandwidth you *should* have paid for (my isp for example use to limit p2p software by blocking the main p2p programs standard ports).
Wow, what a nasty prospective ...

It's Comcast actually, I have them but have never received a warning or suspension of service of any kind (yet?), and I download plenty...

try living in belgium , 2 companies having a monopoly on DSL and cable lines since they own it . 50 euros a month for 12GB a month , there is no unlimited internet available in this shithole besides some DSL provider that goes really slow when you go over a certain amount of GBs a month . But thats not an option since i need the speed and multiple unique IP addies cause i hate routers .
if i drive a mins north i can get unlimited bandwith for half the price in the netherlands .

@ stooz: it's reported as being the first one ever told about, hope it will remain that, the first and only ! and that no other isps will ever have such an idea !!!
@ yoyoxp: but that 50 gb limit is known to users ??? anyway yes it's way too little ... but tell me how much do u pay for such a contract ???
@ stefan: O . M . G . ! i don't wanna put the finger inside the plague as we are used to say here ... but hey hey hey that's really absurd !!! i thought u.s.a. isps were getting nasty and that italian ones had pathetic limits and costs but compared to your country here we are in paradise !!! i have a 8mb (w/64kB in upload) at less than 50 euros / month with unlimited usage (even the speeds are usually less than half that values in reality and sometime some tricks are used to save the isp's bandwidth and cause way too much regular disconnections for my taste).
I won't complain anymore abuout my country's isps !

The thing is they do it cause they can , they got huge profits for years , and i mean huge , and give the share holders alot of money , just to make them happy .
The cable and telephone networks are 100% payed for by the belgian gouverment aka the tax payers , cause when that happend both companies were still state owned also .
Then they got privatised.... each had a monopoly , they did price agreements , not competing against eachother . Now i am not completely sure about the technical aspect of the cable network , but there isnt a single other competitor . for DSL there are some , they provide better deals , but are capped in speed by the monopoly ISP that owns the network cause it still goes mainly over theirs , and bandwith wise its a few GB more and a few euros less , they simply cant compete even if they wanted to .
When asked why there is a bandwith limit ( it irretates me more then the expensive price ) they say the network isnt good enough to sustain it .... what a load of bullcrap , we have one the most modern networks in the world cause it was financed and build by the state back then . we can download at 2100 KB/s and upload at 64KB/s , but whats the use ? internet is very stable , so is it for anyone else around the world with unlimited band with , i always tell them to drive 15 mins north to Holland , they download like crazy and i never heard any of them complain about stability , this is fucking 2007 , i am affraid to open youtube links , i cant patch my games , do not even mention Mods of 1GB for games , i share internet with 4 other ppl in this household , i feel like an ass for reminding them all the time to be careful downloading stuff .
I have friends in the USA send me stacks of DVDs filled with stuff ( mostly legal , its that bad ) so i can enjoy most of the things i like on the computer even if i have to wait a few months , but still i am thankful for them helping me out .
ever considered moving cause of your ISP ? i did , since i love MP gaming / communicating / information over the internet , and 12gb is quickly gone by just visiting websites with too much flash animations in it .
/end rant , think of me when you download huge files

@ yoyoxp: uhm i suppose that at least it's fair if it's stated correctly on the contract, but you didn't say how much it costs ? can u ? just 4 curiosity.
@ stefan f: that's a sad story ... yeah when a company or a few companies have complete monopoly over a type of service good or bad things can happen ... anyway i didn't imagine in belgium there was such a situation nowaday. here in italy there is too a company that has probably (probably since who knows exactly) monopoly over the communications and internet services, then many other companies that rent the lines from it and sells a variety of services with different pluses and minuses (generally crap and normally with some not openly told bad surprise you will discover only some time later you sign the contract). in other words if you want the good service here you have to go with the big daddy of the companies and pay a nice amount. at least here if you want something generally you can buy it. glass fiber connections and high-end speeds are becoming more and more present, the cost is high but generally it's a good service. and here there is no problem getting at least a theorical unlimited bandwidth.
But tell me, when u reach the 12 gb limit what happens ? The line goes down until the next month ?
I hope that in the near future your isps raise (quite) a bit that limit !!!

@imaginary.number
When you go over the limit, you've got two choices:
1)Let them squeeze your connection to 56kbps if your isp is Telenet (64kbps if Skynet is your isp)
2)Pay for extra downloadvolume @ 1 euro/gigabyte
The problem is that the average person in Belgium only knows about the 2 large ISPs, Telenet and Belgacom. The other, smaller ISPs that offer better deals don't advertise on television or on billboards.
One of the reasons that the large ISPs can do this is because no other ISP except Telenet is allowed to use the cable network for internet. Belgacom on the other hand owns the telephone network, so anyone who wants to start his own DSL-based ISP has to pay them to use their network.
Belgacom and Telenet do offer contracts with a bigger download limit, but the prices are outrageous compared to our neighbouring countries.
e.g. The Telenet TurboNet contract, you get a limit of 35 gig, 20 mbps down, 512 kbps up but it costs 61,32 euro/month.

Our speeds are not amazing - 5mbps/1mbps for ~50$ a month, but at least we don't have any limit on bandwidth. |

Officially, but not practically. And if it does, than it's very rare. Besides that, Netvision sucks anyways.

This is why I love Sweden... Even if you're not having fiber you can still easily get 8mbit cheap unless you have really long cable to the station. No download limits and no one really gives a crap about piracy... At least not the ISP's...

Unreal. In my country we had the same situation for 10y. Main telephone company was sold to Deutsche telekom. Slow net with high rates. Same like youre country. But then new companys (3 of them) started digging and laying their own phone lines and guess what happend. In 1y my net went up 3 times in speed and prices went down more then a double. My contry is shithole compared to yourse so i dont understand why no one doest do the same thing there.

Here in France it is 30€ for 30 mega (adsl2+ or cable) with free international phone and 100 TV channels, no fucking dl cap, also FTTH (fiber to the home) is starting to spread in big cities at the same price (100mb download/50mb upload).

I went over my cap 3 months in a row and got a phone call from a guy (at the 4th month) telling me I went over my limit. He was polite about it and let me know about the other options. That was my warning and it was ok. I did upgrade a while later but I don't d/l like I used too.
So, imaginary.number Canada does it too. Maybe not as bad tho because the copyright people can't sue Canadians as of yet.

@ $en$i : i overheard that in France (as in Sweden) these kind of services were amongst the best ... yet it's still astounding to me to see such an enormous difference in these services between supposedly hi-tech and near european countries !
@ pistolshrimp : well at least your isp is polite, that's more than acceptable such a behaviour.
What surprised me was the fact i posted at the beginning (you buy an unlimited dl service and you discover it has limits ?! wtf !).
I really hope it will be remembered as an isolated case and that we won't read similar things in the future.
