Hi,
Just wondering about this release...it says:
"Once Windows is installed, run the crack.exe inside of the /CRACK
dir on CD1 to get rid of the 60 day activation."
This sounds dodgy - i was wondering if anyone has tried using a VLK key instead when installing - cracking the activation in XP never seems to fully works - esp when you try a windows update later down the line.
If you use a VLK - does it now ask to be activated - or is this a retail release?
Cheers

Microsoft.Windows.XP.Media.Center.Edition.2005.RTM-Betas_CD1.iso
Microsoft.Windows.XP.Media.Center.Edition.2005.RTM-Betas_CD2.iso
DOES ANYBODY KNOW ABOUT THIS VERSION?
IS THAT THE SAME WITH THE BRICK ONE!

This is a retail as there is no Volume License Media Center. The product key you enter during installation determines whether or not it asks for CD2, which contains the files for Media Center and Tablet PC. Therefore a VLK will not be accepted.
I have tested this release and have concluded that it has bin errors and should be nuked, as it does not work. All you really need is a retail Windows XP w/ SP2 and a Media Center key (better if its valid that way you don't have to deal with this crack shit), and of course CD2 from this release.
I will try the Betas release ASAP.

4 Door,
I own two licences of winxp pro retail...i recently made a slipstreamed sp2 disc. so your saying that i can make a legit mediacenter ed install out of that combined with disc 2 from this release? If media center ed.is rtm only, how do we get a legit key?

1. This version does work. (great release for homemade)
2. But it a home made version.
3. If you right click on the install cab of mce on cd 2 the dates don't match with the final build.
4. You are better of with the 2 cd release from #betas and it more stable.
5. Better off waiting for someone to release the oem or msdn version

Either through MSDN or an OEM key.

I'm installing the Plank release right now. I noticed in the EULA that this is "prerelease code", which was a bit of a disappointment.

It boots faster than regular XP, from what I've seen, if that was the question. I had no problems burning the discs, install was straightforward - apart from having to swap in disc 2 at one point; when it was through with disc 2 it asked for the SP2 cd, meaning disc 1 again (sp2 is integrated on cd 1).
There were 2 occasions when my mouse moved very sluggishly, cpu was showing 100% usage - once when running a small app, the other time installing Acrobat Reader. Not had that happen with XP before, so maybe this release is a bit flaky.
Anyhow, as I'm not into home theatre, etc, I've dumped it and gone back to my humble XP Home.

Two things I forgot to mention:
1. I didn't use the activation crack provided by Plank; used another one I found in an "add-on" pack floating about somewhere. This involved putting the clock a year forward, booting to find you're out of time, rebooting in Safe Mode, running the patch, rebooting in Normal Mode & resetting the clock. I then put the clock forward to 2009 and everything was fine, no links for activation, no nags, so that patch certainly worked.
2. For the first time ever I clicked on the "is this software genuine" button in Explorer. The engine that M$ installed certainly seemed to think my OS was o.k. I moved on to the next step - trying to identify which of 3 illustrated CDs it came on.........got kinda stuck on that one, lol.

OOPS! Seems the problem I had with the sluggish response of the OS was down to issues between my wireless card and SP2....I had exactly the same problem when I installed SP2 on my XP Home. Unfortunately, Netgear's answer to the problem so far is a beta driver available on their site that caused me to blue screen after connectiing to my LAN......back to the original driver and hope Netgear get their fingers out of their asses real soon. So it looks like the Plank release isn't as flaky as I originally thought. Using their Activation crack might be a problem, though.

Allright, I've tested some things. I installed Alcohol 120% and tried burning it. That works fine! Mounting with D-tools, Alcohol 120% or burning with NERO doesn't work.
Alcohol is the only solution to solve the bad bin problems.
I also noticed the Prerelease indeed, indicating that this is a beta release?

Yes and I'm working on a proper release, as I got my MSDN account access back.

I really don't know why some are getting bin errors.
I burnt this release with nero and it installed just fine. With the exception
of the EULA date, everything is the same as the OEM version which I just bought.
XP Media Center Edition is the same as XP Pro, and better. If you add a TV tuner card, you get a great VCR machine.
Also, the crack provided by BRICK is the same as the one found on the german sites, it just has a different look to it.

For the biggest part that is true, however XP MCE can't join a domain, in that part XP Pro is still better.

1.burn with cdrwin 5
2.next do a fresh install(don't do a upgrade or it'll ask you for a actvation key)meaning boot cd 1st when you start up install.
3.use the patch in cd.1 what i did was just wait until you get a box ask you to put cd 1 back in just click cancel and ok and apply patch and reboot. from there it should be activated and no more activation notice asking.
4.thats all folks!
