Good game, best settlers game in a while. Hardly a GOTY contender but ok to chill out with. Not as good as the first settlers game. Would like a proper sandbox mode and wish they kept the border expansion system of the original. Is more boring/less-fun than the old ones..

While this game at least is a bit fun (compared to "Settlers V") it doesn't deserve to be called a Settlers game, as it doesn't have much in common with the first four Settlers games. Had they just called it Rise of an Empire I would be more likely to buy it, but it sure landed on the "do no buy" list because of this

And why did they go back to internet activation? During the beta they found out it wasn't a good idea so they said they scrapped it... now all of the sudden it's a good idea again? Sad

Simply the best game ive played all year - its absolutely brilliant.. and i'm even gonna buy it Smile First game felt is worth actually paying for since Gothic III (which incidently was a mistake due to it being a bugfest)

If only all games released were as polished as this one.. its great for those who have not played any settlers games before..

Oh and it runs fine here, no need for a crack.. all saves reload.

But it's neither polished nor a Settler game. And it's missing basic features such as an AI. There's no way in hell I'll support a game that doesn't have a basic feature such as that
The game also have lots of bugs (trying to build a wall can be a pain in the ass), and based on the MP experience I had with the beta it doesn't look like the MP part works (out of ~50 games I've only finished two because of disconnections... haven't heard about if they have fixed these problems in the release)
Just my opinion, of course you're welcome to buy the game if you really want to Smile

I would probably have liked this game more if it was just called Rise of an Empire, this game is an insult to Settlers fans (ok, not as much an insult as "Settlers" V, but still an insult)

i was quite impressed with the AI my knights didnt get stuck or go the long way around when traveling long distances.
I was stuck on that wool quest aswell you have to go West of your settlement and follow the road down, instead of directly south as the guy says

hope a nocd comes out, so annoying (well a little annoying) to have to mount the cd every time

You're playing singleplayer missions - they are scripted. Try playing custom games to see how good the AI is. Sorry but there are MANY better games out there. This is nice, but it's not a settlers game.

That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about playing a game against the computer, it's impossible. It's 100% scripted, the computer doesn't do anything unless you trigger an event

Perhaps i was a tad over zealous in my praise, but it still stands head and shoulders above the endless barrage of FPS's,racing and other boring crap we have been fed this, and every year.. so far..

So maybe its not absolutely brilliant, but it is when you look at what rubbish we have to compare it to.

True... the game itself is fun, but considering that I prefer to play RTS games in SP there's not much to come for Sad

I tried about 50 MP games in the beta, finished two... the rest ended because of disconnections (not because people quit, but server problems)

Ok then so what Settlers game do you lads consider the best? i only really got into these games at the last expansion (heritage of kings?) or some such similar title.

I love the day to day life of the settlers.. making sure they are fed and happy and exploring new areas and claiming them for my mini kingdom.. the more skills and trades the better and freedom is a must.. so what settlers game comes closest to what i have described?

settlers 2 for the orinal gameplay but the remake is a true repesentation of the exact gameplay of settlers and its awesome. for the new settlers settlers 3 and to a degree 4 are excelent. settlers 5 is rubbish. settlers 6 is not really true settlers but its still quite good.

Settlers I (a.k.a. Surf City) is great
Settlers II is the best Settlers game there is, taking all the good parts from the first game and adding more good parts. The remake is good, but could be better. The gameplay is the same, but the included maps are worse (not to mention the disaster they call map editor). They should have included the campaign from the original, the campaign in the remake is just boring
Settlers III is ok, nothing special... but still fun enough
Settlers IV was like III, except with more boring "nations". Only thing they did better than III is the graphics
Settlers V... now that was a disaster to say the least
Settlers VI... it's ok, nothing I'll still be playing in a year from now... and like V this doesn't deserve the Settlers title

my point of view is like this

Settlers I - this game and Dune 2 where the only two games i played 24/7 on my amiga
Settlers II - the same concept but with added Stargates that transpost you to different islands , fantastic game even better then the original
Settlers III - when i first played it i was shocked that they stole the menu from Age of Empires and added kiddy graphics , game was meh crappy and boring
Settlers IV - was the same like part 3 but with lame story added about the fight of the evil god that destroys the green land - another kiddy shit game
Settlers V - game was OK finally new engine , finally they dumped that shitty kiddy theme and finally in 3D but people bitched about it , why i tell you why , because it was a 1:1 clone of Age of Empires with heroes and dumbed down economic system and it was more a RTS game then a Economic game (game was more like Warcraft 3 with the theme of Age of Empires)
Settlers VI - played it for a 6h (now in mission 4) and this game is the same like Settlers V but with new gfx and fixed economic system (but still the economic system is so dumbed down that it hurts), still don`t know why i still play it maybe its the shininess of the new graphical engine they used or the great story mode don`t know , but like Adagio.81 said Settlers was a Economic game not a bloody RTS

Me too I played Settlers on my Amiga 500 with friends, it is an Amiga game afterall, a year after in 1994 the pc version as out. The main differences was the music was better on Amiga but on PC you had SVGA support.

Settlers 1: (Amiga/PC) Awesome game I played this for years to come. [Bought]
Settlers 2: Worthy sequal, hightly recommeded. [Bought]
Settlers 3: Dissapointed me (hate the kiddy gfx), it didnt last much before I lost interest. [Bought]
Settlers 4: Dissapointment, more kiddy stuff!
Settlers 5: Better then 3/4 and nice gfx but was boring.
Settlers II: 10th Anniversary: Finally Bluebyte lisen to the fans! 3th best settlers game. I hope for a remake of Settlers 1! [Bought]
Settlers ROAE: Beautiful graphics, more interesting and diversity then S5, 4th place overall.

Still got the original of Settlers for my amiga, box and manuals. I've probably only ever played Frontier and Champ Manager more than I have The Settlers, just wish they'd do a proper remake of the first two.

While the remake was good, it could have been much better. The graphics was a bit too kiddish, the AI was just as stupid as in Settlers II and there's no random map generator (don't mention the disaster they included in the expansion pack)

The thing I miss the most about the first Settlers game was the round world, would be nice to have an option to play any map like that in a remake

---

I believe I just finished the worst mission ever in an RTS game:

The Tios mission has the following story:
Tios is a very run-down city and the mayor has made a very stupid bet: He will give over the city to the enemy if he doesn't manage to prepare a tournament in time (you get so many hours to finish the mission, that it's impossible to lose). He now asks the player to run the city while he prepares the tournament... But he kinda needs a bit of help to prepare the tournament, like wood, clothes, swords, lots of money and protection against bandits (the only enemies on the map). You have to give him everything that is needed to get the tournament running... he does NOTHING himself (surprise)... that has to be the most stupid story ever
And to make matters worse, at the end of the game (when he asks for money) you can only send 250 gold at a time (out of the 2000 he needs)... just great, lots of time wasted waiting for the money to arrive (I had more than 4000 gold at that time)
