Just built pc. My 300GB 6B300S0 Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300GB Hard Drive HD is giving read errors - very slow to extract anything in new computer using ABIT IP35-E LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard. Worked fine on my old dell p4

SATA connector. I am also using another SATA drive (SATA3) WD 500GB and works fine.

Can it be because I have a sata3 drive and a sata1 drive on same board? I replaced sata cable, updated bios.

Any idea on why this drive does not read correctly anymore in new board? Thanks!

Check in the device manager if your drive is recognized properly. If you installed any 'additional' RAID or SCSI drivers for your mobo, the board might mistake the HD for a SCSI drive, in which case the drive would run really really slow. But I don't know about read errors.

Uninstalling those drivers should fix the problem. (Check the Add/Remove programs in control panel, they can be uninstalled from there sometimes)

Also, if this is not the issue, try checking the jumpers on the HD. And try switching your drives, so you can determine wheter it's the mobos or HDs fault.

Do you have AHCI enabled in the Bios? If so try turning it off, Sata I drives do not support NCQ, maybe that's the problem.

1 - device manager does list it under disk drive. nothing under scsi raid
2 - no jumpers on sata drives.
3 - ahci - cant find that at all in bios.
4 - put hd back in dell. works perfect. def. mobo/driver issue

also, i changed in bios from auto detect to :lba, cha ---all same problem.. slow/read errors.

6B300S0 maxtor IS NCQ! is that the problem? i have no idea how to disable ncq or is this drive just not compatibley mobo intel core2duo?

well the other new sata drive also has ncq - works fine. i dont know now.

It would still be listed under Disk Drives, but it's name would have "SCSI device"(or something similar to that) appended to it.

I doubt it's the NCQ since the other drive works fine.

Try to find to which IDE channel is your drive connected to(or check them all) and be sure they're all set to DMA. (In device manager)

Also I'd try looking in add/remove programs and deleting any drivers that are removable(and HD/Mobo related). Then if you're feeling up to it delete the SATA controller drivers and reinstall.

Swapped out 2nd sata1 drive from dell (maxtor again 250 gb different model) = put it in abit new pc-works fine.

so - im just going to put the 300gb hd in the dell-reformat windows, and just stick with this 250gb instead.
