I always thought that they never included Shephard in HL2, because that way they'll have to give him some sort of a character if Gordon will meet him. Barney appeared as a living character in Opposing Force already, so there was no problem with him.

Playing with Shephard again can kick so much ass.

dude we should build a prison full of these puzzles and kidnap these tards in the middle of the night and drop them in, and if they dont get out in time they die. thatd be cool i think.

this will be in saw 12 in 2044 Smile

Hopefully he will play a part in HL3!

What would be cool is a more militaristic bent on the game (when controlling Shepard) - it would fit in with the way they tried to differentiate the original Opposing Force expansion at the time. Combat is a little perfunctory or dominated by other factors so far in HL2 (like using the gravity gun or puzzle solving). A return to the style of battles that were common against the Marines in the original Half-Life for example would be nice.

I'm not sure why, but with the release of HL2 the enemies suddenly turned into stormtroopers - basically there to be shot at rather than feared. If you catch my drift Very Happy

Doesn't anyone remember the spate of Marine infested custom maps when Half-Life/Opposing Force were released? You don't get that sort of thing these days, its always some hook or story mode.

Just finished, and might I add, shed a tear or two at the end. I have always liked the HL2 world. The way that it is comforting (the well-worn, second hand couches, throw-rugs over dusty wooden floor planks) and foreboding at the same time. It can be a quite quiet and peaceful place. Especially the outdoor settings. Many times I have docked my boat (HL2) or parked my car just to take in the scenery, knowing very well that danger is lurking just around the corner.

I did find a few things odd in this episode, however. At one point a man is welding a car but he has no welder. He is just standing next to the car with his arms spread out from his side and his legs slightly apart as sparks flare out of his left sleeve. At another point when some volunteers from the city are being questioned, they seem to be stuck up to their knees in a wooden block and they are standing with their arms spread out like the welder. I did find this slightly strange but I must say, after playing Garry's Mod for a few years, everything seemed just fine and dandy.

Now, I'm interested in finding a release of Portal that will not take me 17 years to download. And I should just mention here that with all of Bioshock's (2K Irrational) talk of spending so much time on there water effects -- the puddles in HL2EP2 blew away the oceans of Rapture.

See you floating.

Whats even more interesting is that the Marine AI in the original Half Life was so good that if you just rushed into them they would shoot you to pieces in a matter of seconds. So you had to go and quicksave every 3 seconds, and then right after you get killed by a new group of marines you quick load, and then attack them with a more coherent plan now that you know their position in the room.

The point I am trying to make is that the AI was much more of a challenge back then because it equated to the human player. In HL2 however, I can pass through 3 combine patrols of per dozen people without breaking a sweat. Quite a pity, and one of the reasons why the original will always be better Very Happy

Makes you wonder how the Black Mesa Source people will attempt to code such an AI...

That is almost exactly the first thought I had when playing the game. Not the alpha leak, which just blew me away with the physics and graphics at the time. But playing the campaign for the first time, I kept wondering what happened to the AI that floored me with Half Life 1.

I still remember the first time I heard 'frag out' and a grenade coming from a bunker where I couldn't even see the enemy. And countless other times the enemy surprised me with their grenade tosses, flanking from behind, using cover, and doing everything else the vanilla HL2 AI just seems to have forgot how to do. Seems I end up laughing more at grenades bouncing back or somehow the enemy managing to kill themselves instead of me.

But anyways, I HIGHLY recommend a 3rd party mod for exactly this reason. Funny how it's not even listed on steam but it's (IMHO) the best out there. SMOD Tactical is the name and it actually makes the game a challenge-you actually have to think of strategy before rushing into a new area. Actually made me hold off on ep2 until I play the main campaign again, feels like a whole new game, and frankly will be hard playing the episodes without the mod loaded. I am really hoping the guy will get both ep1 and ep2 working by the time I get around to em.

It has come to my attention that my description in my first post about some NPC's "...arms spread out from his side and legs slightly apart..." is called the 'Jesus Christ Position' which is now #1 on my list of Possible Band Names. For those of you with 'legit' versions of the game, I strongly urge you to download the Unleashed release to enjoy the 'Jesus Christ Position' as it was intended by the developers. This indeed is the ultimate 'Easter Egg'.

The NPC's having their arms spread out and a few missing textures have to do with that the steam emulator contains a few bugs which are being fixed atm. by some people... So I guess we'll see some small fix soon Smile

Finished the game already those few missing textures and AI bug didn't bother me ;p

Isn't he/she the headcrab you see towards the end, inside the "object"?
(Same place you stick the garden gnome in if you want that achievement.)

I wonder if it survived.

You also see them when viewing a profile in the steam community, don't have that many yet myself but they are just bonuses and some of them are quite difficult to achieve.
(Rocket Gnome and Grub being those I'm currently trying to finish but there's alot of those Antlion grubs to crush.)
