On saturday I helped my friend move. Her husband is outta town so she hired a moving company from out of the paper that advertised $30/hr. She called the ad and was quote $30/hr with 2 guys and a 3 or 5 ton truck. She choose the 3 ton truck. She explained the new place she was moving into had an elevator police that allows for only one tenants moving in at a time. The evaluator had to be scheduled basically and her time slot was from 6-8. The guy said he understood and booked everything for her. The movers were suppose to be there at 4, giving us 2 hrs to load the truck to make it to the new building by 6.

Anyway the day of the move the company called her and asked if they could come now, which was 2 pm. That was way to early because then we would of been stuck until our time of 6 pm with the elevator. There is a building man that locks and unlocks the elevator for the move. We get one whole evaluator to ourselves that won’t stop at any other floor.

Anyway they said they would be there at 3:30 instead and she agreed.

3:30 comes no guys. 4 comes no guys. She is calling frantic. It is the owner on the phone and you can hardly understand him. He said they would be there shortly. 4:20 no guys. She calls again. The owner now said he was 2 blocks away but won’t give us a time. We call again 20 mins later. Finally they show up at 5:30. 1.5 hrs late and now our window is screwed.

We watch them from the balcony turns out there are 3 guys. We think ok, maybe they sent an extra guy because of the elevator window time frame and because they were late. We watch them smoke a few cig’s and then one leaves and goes to the store down the street.

Now we are screwed because we can’t cancel and get another company, plus she had to be out that night. I reminded her NOT TO YELL at them because all the movers will do is take it out on her stuff. She agrees but explains they have to be fast.

The movers are EX DRUG ADDICTS. They are filthy filthy dirty and stink to high hell of mould and sweat. They were picking up cig butts off the ground and smoking them. They had open sores on their arms. Very skinny. That smell was all over them. One of the guys we found drinking from her kitchen tap directly with his mouth. He couldn’t even follow simple instructions like stop and he bashed the hell out

Then we started to get a bad feeling about the quote. Everything else is going wrong. Why not the quote. Three movers for a $30/hr move. ($10 each and what about the truck) There were other ads with similar prices so it isn’t that different but so far the whole move is fucked. They didn’t confirm the cost before they started which is werid as well. In Vancouver lots of down and out drug addicts mean cheap labour so who knows?

WE DIDN’T SAY ANYTHING AT THIS POINT BECAUSE THEN IT IS KINDA LIKE OPENING THE CONTRACT UP AGAIN and we weren’t going to pay any different price. We wanted them to move her in first before we got into it about the price because at this point we couldn’t have them walk away.
We got to the new building AT 8PM WHICH MISSED OUT ON OUR WINDOW. Lucky for us it turns out we could still move it because we were the last to move in that day. 11 others were before us that day

Usually movers won’t unlock the truck until there is a cheque in their hand. They guys were so clueless they didn’t even do that. Thank god for that because we would of HAD to pay to get the stuff out.

After it is over they start calculating out the hrs and the cost and they say it is $90/hr. She said no way was she going to pay that. She was quoted $30/hr . She showed them the ad from the paper. Lucky we kept it.

There was a lot of yelling and screaming going back and forth. She said I will take it up with the owner and they called him for her. owner said he was 2 mins away.

So we go downstairs to meet up with Honest Abe, the owner. That was the real name of the company and he went by Abe. He was no Abe tho, probably Abepreet or Abeinderjeet or something. That plays no importance in what happened tho.

We tell building manager with evaluator key to witness that we are paying the guys. That there was a problem with the price quoted. This is where everything starts to get nasty.

Abe calls and turns out he is right upstaires at her new apt. upstairs. He won’t say how he got up without a key, just that “He has his ways” and to come up. She said "No, you come down here". She explained to Abe she booked with Mark, the movers even knew mark. The movers said Mark was an idiot and shouldn’t be answering the phone.

No way we were being alone with them in a pretty much unoccupied newly built building.

Then Abe comes down the elevator yelling and swearing into his cell phone (not talking to us) kicking moving blankets out of the elevator.

It was really weird because he wouldn’t hang up, kept yelling, and my friend is like “are you abe” and he is ignoring us. We wait for a minute maybe. Then she yells at him "I gave the money to your guys plus tip" We walk to the elevator. Then he hangs up and starts yelling at us to pay up or else. He in now in my friends face yelling.

She goes around him and starts going to the elevator again, me beside her

Building elevator guy PUSHES us behind him and into the elevator, he hits our floor.

Abe is yelling he is going to call the police. We said “Yes, call them” and then abes face kinda went blank for a sec and then he got really mad. Abe is trying to get into the elevator with us and the building guy is blocking him so the doors can close. Abe is now arguing with the building guy to let him up, that he lived there which was bullshit.

Building guy shoves Abe away from the elevator door and the door closes and my g/f and I are alone on the elevator going “WTF”. Then we hear booting to the metal elevator doors and yelling, more banging. We didn’t know if they were beating up this building manager who is about 21 and about 5 10 maybe 165 lbs. The further up we go the quiter it gets. I think they had stopped at that point, I think we would of been able to hear them if they were still going at it.

We went all the way up to her floor, grabed her phone and went back down down to the parking level beneath from where we had just came from to listen. We turned off the phones. Heard some voices. Then we watched the truck pull away. We waited a while longer and heard nothing. Then we went back to the floor in question to check to make sure building manager was ok. His car was gone and there was no blood that we could see so we think they were just kicking the shit outta the elevator. No damage anywhere that we saw.

So we think everything is fine but we still have to leave and go get her dog from the old apt. Sad Smart movers would of realized this.

So back down to the parkade we go. Looking around corners. Keys out in hand. Get into her car. Fucking car won’t start. It is a short somewhere so we have to get out and rock it, play with the shift. (Don’t ask) and it starts.

We drive back to her old apt. We drive slowly down the street. We check for anybody sitting in a car. We park out in front of the building because her god-dam private parking garage isn’t so private at the moment because the door is broken because the crack heads took part of it for scrap metal to sell. Her old building has turned into crack head central. Drug deals in elevators in front of her 10 yr old son.

Now we are feeling brave and the dog has to pee. We figure what are the changes of them driving around looking for us. Plus we are walking with a dog so somewhat not what they would even be watching for.

We talk the dog out and walk to the gas station 2 blocks away.

I walk into the store part and RUN RIGHT SMACK INTO MOVER No1. I quickly turn and go to the fridge. I want to txt my friend but I can’t. Then I have eye contact with her. I knows she knows.

She nods and walks to the opposite side and then she runs smack into MOVER NO 2 on the pay phone.

Mover no. 2 told her not to worry. Abe was just pissed as his business. Not to worry, they weren’t going to do anything to us. Blah, blah, blah. Still they didn’t point us out to Abe who was filling up the truck.

So we walk back really fast to the old apt, grab our stuff and head back to the new place. No problems.

We start into the drinks, smoke a joint and head off to the club which is now located 1.5 blocks from her house. Hehehehe. Quite the night. (syco knows the rest of that story)

The next morning we go grab some groceries and run into Abe. He does nothing. This all happened in a 3 block radius so we are going to be bumping into them alot.

I know this is a really long post but whole thing scared this shit outta me so I had to write about it.

I worked for Allied Van Lines when I was younger. The shit I saw from 'professional' movers and the flybynight movers made my blood pressure boil.

When I move I get my own truck and do it myself.

What part of the lower mainland you from? Your bro is from Kelona?

Yea, movers are usually low lifes, but some are not. I always moverd myself as well. My famiy helped. Friends helped. I bought/made dinner for everyone and when the parents went home I bought the beer.

The moving Company took her cd/dvd rack!!! Her sons Nintondo game boy and some games. (we hope some young kid gets it, maybe poor, and deserves it) A bunch of cd's and DVD's. They also took some clothes. Underwear!

I know a bag ripped open. So they claimed. She saw me with panties in the the elevator. I had to calm her down. Only one bag had her bras and things. We couldn't find that bag in mention during the move. There were socks on the floor of the elevator.
Fubu sport socks, I bought her those for her b-day.

We keep running into them too. She did last night. I did today pulling into her garage. He noticed me too, he was on the corner.

Then we left the new apt, had one cross in front of us using a cross walk across a major road. How weird is that?

I'm in the Kootenays. When I worked for Allied I did the moves into or out of the Lower Mainland so I am familiar with the area.

I am not generalizing at all. This wasn't even a real moving company I think. There are so many guys here in despair for a job, usually a one time deal. Get paid that same day sort of thing.

There are lots of guys who are in the real moving business. They offer insurance and give written contacts. I have total respect for them. Honest work.

You are right tho, not all movers are addicts or theives.
